ROCKEFELLERTheFour Hundred SixtiethCONVOCATIONTheSPRINGTHIRD SESSIONJune TenthA.D. Two ThousandHARPER QUADRANGLETHE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGOThe University of Chicago was founded in 1892 by John D. Rockefeller, biblicalscholar William Rainey Harper, and Chicago-area Baptists. The University'sArticles of Incorporation commit the institution to excellence in both undergraduateand graduate education, an explicit policy of co-education, and an atmosphere of nonsectarianism.Harper agreed to become the first president of the University on the conditionthat he be allowed to establish a university that would be unlike any other. He conceived of a university that would emphasize the creation of new knowledge and"make the work of investigation primary." To this end, the University has alwaysbeen dedicated to excellence in research and has sought the most distinguished schol-ars for its faculty. . /Over the years, the University and its fC!f_ulty have had a major ir:J:Pact onAmerican higher education. Faculty scholarship has shaped several essential disciplines and established important and distinctive "Chicago schools" in such disparatefields as economics, evolutionary biology, sociology, literary criticism, anthropology, and law and economics. Seventy-one Nobel laureates have been members of thefaculty, researchers, or students at the University. Programmatic innovations originating at the University include the invention of the four-quarter system, the establishment of a coherent program of general education for undergraduates, the initiation of a full-time medical school teaching faculty, and the development of extensioncourses and programs in the liberal arts for adults. The University includes an undergraduate College, the William B. andCatherine V. Graham School of General Studies.four graduate divisions (BiologicalSciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences), six graduate professional schools (Graduate School of Business, Divinity School, Law School, PritzkerSchool of Medicine, Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies, andSchool of Social Service Administration), and a diverse collection of academic support units and resources including libraries, research institutes, clinics, museums, theaters and a university press. The University has a faculty of more than 1,200 andan enrollment of over 12,000 students. The 200 acre campus is located along theMidway Plaisance in Hyde Park, a residential community on'Lake Michigan southof Chicago's Loop. The University's English Collegiate Gothic buildings, built of gray Indianalimestone, were designed to frame shady, green quadrangles. Contemporary campusbuildings have been designed in keeping with the original Gothic theme while drawing from the tradition of great modern architecture for which the city of Chicago isfamous. Eero Saarinen and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed striking buildingsfor the Law School and the School of Social Service Administration. The NationalTrust for Historic Preservation praised the University for its insistence on architectural continuity over a "a century of social and academic change."On July 1, 1993, Hugo F. Sonnenschein became the University's eleventhPresident.ORDER Of EXERCISESFor the Conferring of DegreesTen o'clockHUGO F. In little more thana decade she has energetically published three books, has edited one and has two more in the works. Her interests range from classical rhetoric, Latin epic, Roman philosophy, and the Greek novel tothe political culture in the reign of Nero, and the horizon of her interests seems to expand with eachnew project.More importantly, she applies the same incredible energy and range of expertise to her teaching inthe College, where she has managed to win this award after only five quarters of teaching. She getsrave reviews in her Latin courses, in her history courses and in her teaching in the Core, where thewords enthusiastic and energetic (often accompanied by exclamation points) virtually leap off thepage! The students in her second-year Latin courses tell us, for example, that in addition to working themvery hard on their Latin reading skills, she also manages to teach them a great deal about Romanpolitics and culture. They also report that in addition to being tough and very demanding, she isalso fair-minded, helpful and cares a lot about individual students. Two students remark that sheis the best Latin professor they have ever had.The students in her section of" Human Being and Citizen", a class in the Humanities Core, reportthat she continually generates intellectual fervor and energy and that she is a fabulous discussionleader. They are repeatedly impressed with her great knowledge of the culture and history ofancient Rome and with the way that she makes the material come alive in the classroom. In fact, the students were able to come up with only one suggestion on how to 'make the class better: makeProf. Bartsch teach all three parts of the year-long sequence instead of just one.Shadi Bartsch is an excellent example of the kind of professor that we value most in the College andthe University: she applies her great intelligence, learning and energy to both her scholarship andher teaching, and in the process shows us how they are so closely interrelated and indeed inseparable. The candidate will be presented by Christopher Faraone, Professor and Chairman of the Department of ClassicalLanguages and Literatures; Professor, Department of New Testament and Early Christian Literature, Committees onthe Ancient Mediterranean World and on General Studies in the Humanities, and the College.CITATIONDistinguished scholar and gifted teacher in the language, culture and literature of the early RomanEmpire, you bring great energy, high expectations and an enormous breadth of knowledge to theclassroom.DAVID G. GRIERAssociate Professor, Department of Physics, the James Franck Institute, and the CollegeDavid Grier studies the random jittering of microscopic colloidal particles, in order to discern theorigins of their spontaneous self-organization into useful structures. He has shown new ways ofdiscerning patterns in the jittering by teasing the particles with beams of light. By such means,David has uncovered an unexpected form of attraction between the particles and this has gained himinternational recognition. David's methods have been used to understand the meaning of organizedelectric currents in superconductors. His methods have been widely adopted by others.David makes such discoveries happen by infecting his students with his own fascination and wonder at these fluctuating particles and the structures they form. Enthusiasm and high spirits pervadehis lab; the next discovery seems just around the corner. David's undergraduate teaching shows thesame enthusiasm, balanced by much-valued individual attention. He regularly mentors severalsummer undergraduate research students and he administers the summer undergraduate programfor many others. He also fills grade school students with delight and wonder by bringing live science to their classes and by inviting them to his lab. Within the physics faculty, David has playedan active role in designing a major revision of the undergraduate curriculum. As one undergraduate nominator put it, "It is effort, enthusiasm and dedication like this which sets Professor Grierapart and makes him a paradigm of teaching excellence."The candidate will be presented by Thomas A. Witten, Professor, Department of Physics, the James Franck Institute, and the College.CITATIONYou awaken beginners to the power of the physics discipline. You transfuse young scientists withthe joy of shared discovery. You inspire your colleagues to do likewise.D. GALE JOHNSONEliakim Hastings Moore Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Department of Economics, and the CollegeGale Johnson has shared his goodness, humor and sharp insights derived from tireless research andtravels with his students. Some of them here today may be surprised to hear Gale's preparatory workfor this Quantrell award includes holding the posts of Dean of Social Sciences through the 1960's,Department Chairman from 1971-1975, Provost from 1975-1980, and Department Chairman againfrom 1980-1985. In addition to his classroom teaching, Gale has recently devoted substantial energy to the undergraduate program in economics even though he is officially an emeritus member ofthe faculty. Gale Johnson has set an example ofleadership and commitment that will be hard, if notimpossible, for successive generations of faculty at the University of Chicago to match. We acknowledge our debt to the President of Iowa State College of 1944, for instigatingthe famous butter battle. That President, bowing to pressure from the dairy industry, suppressedpublication of a pamphlet written by a junior colleague at Iowa, which stated that the new product, oleo-margarine was a nutritionally satisfactory, cheap substitute for butter. Gale Johnson andTed Schultz left that institution in protest of this censorship. The University of Chicago quicklybecame a premier center for teaching and research in agricultural economics and development.Iowa's loss in 1944 was, and continues to be, our gain. The candidate will be presented by Lars Peter Hansen, Homer]. Livingston Professor and Chairman, Department ojEconomics, and the CollegeCITATIONDistinguished social scientist researcher and inspiring teacher; your students continue your workaround the world. Your valuable insights from years of study enrich your students in the classroom.LAURENS J. METSAssociate Professor, Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology, and the Committee on Genetics, and the CollegeLaurens Mets has had a distinguished career using the single celled alga, Clamydomonas, to studya variety of cellular processes in plants. He was one of the first to appreciate the power of geneticsfor exploring plastid function. His early work established the molecular basis for herbicide resistance and subsequent studies identified an important set of mutations affecting the photosyntheticmachinery of the chloroplast. This work has led to an ongoing collaboration with Graham Fleming.More recently, he established a fruitful collaboration with Daphne Preuss it identify the centromeres of Clamydomonas by tetrad analysis. The work is leading to our first understanding ofcritical sequences required for chromosomal segregation in plants.Dr. Mets' leadership in curriculum development in the biological sciences has been continuous andoutstanding. He has pioneered the development of a systematic, sequential set of courses for biology concentrators. He also played a central role in designing new laboratory and classroom facilities and planning one of the best greenhouse facilities available on any campus for our newest andmost magnificent teaching building, the Biological Sciences Learning Center.Teaching has always been central to Dr. Mets' concept of his role as a university professor. At atime when most biology classes are still conducted in lecture style, he uses the Socratic method toinvolve students in dialogue to seek an understanding of the mystery ofliving systems. He has alsobeen a responsive mentor for our junior faculty, fostering their involvement in the undergraduatecurriculum as a particularly fulfilling aspect of our profession. It is thus with great pride and enthusiasm that I present Laurens Mets for the Llewellyn John andHarriet Manchester Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. The candidate will be presented by Anthony P. Mahowald, Louis Block Professor and Chair, Department of MolecularGenetics and Cell Biology; Professor, Committees on Developmental Biology and on Genetics, and the College.CITATIONDedicated plant geneticist and cell biologist and dedicated teacher, you demonstrate the excitementof modern biology through your probing questions in class, challenging students to think innovatively about the subject, and through your close interaction with students in the laboratory, thusstimulating them to become the next generation of inquisitive scholars.THE LLEWELLYN JOHN AND HARRIET MANCHESTERQUANTRELL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCEIN UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING1938 WILLIAM THOMAS HUTCHINSON 1950 WILLIAM C. The basic elements of American academic attire arethe robe, the hood, and the cap.The style of the robe indicates the rank of the wearer's degree or, in some cases, the wearer's office: a plain black robe for bachelors; a black robe with long, crescentshaped sleeves for masters; and a black robe with velvet front panels and velvet barson the sleeves for doctors or university officials. Beginning at the Spring Convocationin 1965, the doctor's robe of the University of Chicago has been in the school color, maroon. The hood represents the specific degree and the institution by which it was granted. The size oj the hood indicates the rank. The color of the velvet border indicatesthe area of study (white for arts, yellow for science, blue for philosophy, green formedicine, purple for law, and red for divinity). The color of the lining indicates theinstitution.Black mortarboards are worn by recipients of each type of degree. At theUniversity of Chicago, recipients of doctoral degrees wear octagonal velvet tams.THE MARSHAL AND THE STUDENT MARSHALSThe office of Marshal of the University was established in 1895 to assist with theconduct of official ceremonies. Until 1903 the Marshal was an undergraduate upperclassman, assisted by other undergraduate upperclassmen and by members of the faculty. Since 1903 the Marshal has been a member of the faculty, assisted by othermembers of the faculty and by undergraduate upperclassmen. The Marshal, Vice-Marshal, and Assistant Marshals of the University ofChicago wear maroon doctor's robes with alternating black velvet and gold metallicbars on the sleeves. Prior to receiving their bachelor's degrees, Student Marshals wearmaroon bachelor's robes with maroon mortarboards. After receiving their degrees, they wear black mortarboards.Today's Student Marshals are appointed by the President of the University inrecognition of their excellent scholarship and leadership. Appointment as a StudentMarshal is the highest honor conferred by the University upon undergraduate students.SARAH ALISARAH CATHERINE BAGBYJESSICA CHANEY BERRYELIZABETH BIRNKRANTCHRISTINA MARIE BOTTOMSANTHONY JAMES DELMONTEPATRICIA JEAN DUEZJOSEF D.
