Rockefeller, biblical scholar William RaineyHarper, and Chicago-area Baptists. The University's Articles of Incorporation commit the institution toexcellence in both undergraduate and graduate education, an explicit policy of co-education, and an atmosphere of non-sectarianism.Harper agreed to become the first president of the University on the condition that he be allowed toestablish a university that would be unlike any other. He conceived of a university that would emphasizethe creation of new knowledge and "make the work of investigation primary." To this end, the Universityhas always been dedicated to excellence in research and has sought the most distinguished scholars for itsfaculty.Over the years, the University and its faculty have had a major impact on American higher education.Faculty scholarship has shaped several essential disciplines and established important and distinctive"Chicago schools" in such disparate fields as economics, evolutionary biology, sociology, literary criticism, anthropology, and law and economics. Sixty-seven Nobel laureates have been members of the faculty, researchers, or students at the University. Programmatic innovations originating at the University includethe invention of the four-quarter system, the establishment of a coherent program of general education forundergraduates, the initiation of a full-time medical school teaching faculty, and the development of extension courses and programs in the liberal arts for adults. The University includes an undergraduate College, four graduate divisions (Biological Sciences,Humanities, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences), six graduate professional schools (Graduate School ofBusiness, Divinity School, Law School, Pritzker School of Medicine, Irving B. Harris Graduate School ofPublic Policy Studies, and School of Social Service Administration), and a diverse collection of academicsupport units and resources including libraries, research institutes, clinics, museums, theaters, and a university press. The University has a faculty of more than 1,200 and an enrollment of over 12,000 students. The 200 acre campus is located along the Midway Plaisance in Hyde Park, a residential community on LakeMichigan south of Chicago's Loop. The University's English Collegiate Gothic buildings, built of gray Indiana limestone, were designedto frame shady, green quadrangles. Contemporary campus buildings have been designed in keeping withthe original Gothic theme while drawing from the tradition of great modern architecture for which thecity of Chicago is famous. Eero Saarinen and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed striking buildings forthe Law School and the School of Social Service Administration. The National Trust for HistoricPreservation praised the University for its insistence on architect"ural continuity over a "a century of socialand academic change."On July 1, 1993, Hugo F. Sonnenschein became the University's eleventh President.ORDIER Of IEXIERCISIESFor the Conferring of DegreesTen o'clockHUGO F·. Kersten, Jr. Professorin the Division of the Physical Sciences, the Enrico Fermi Institute, and the CollegeMelvyn Shochet is the first to hold the Elaine M. and Samuel D. Kersten Jr. Professorship in the PhysicalSciences. An expert in experimental high-energy physics, Shochet was a member of, and spokesman for,the team that discovered the top quark in 1994. The top quark may have been the last remaining undiscovered fundamental building block of matter. Finding it confirms physicists' so-called Standard Model, the theory of the particles and forces that determine the fundamental nature of matter and energy. Shochethad served since 1988 as co-spokesman for the 440-member Collider Detector at Fermilab collaboration, which published the first direct evidence for the top quark in 1994. He is the author or co-author of morethan 120 articles on elementary particle physics.A recipient of the Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Award for Excellence inUndergraduate Teaching in 1978, Shochet has taught at the University since 1973, when he joined thefaculty as Instructor. He was appointed Professor in 1985. He also served as a visiting scientist at FermiNational Accelerator Laboratory from 1988 until 1995. He received his A.B. in 1966 from the Universityof Pennsylvania and both his M.A. and his Ph.D. in 1972 from Princeton.THE ANTHEMAlleluya Psallat Peter AstonAlleluia: Sings this merry company: Strike the cymbals,Sound the zither. Her distinctive poems combine a luminously personal, often lyrical voice with a keen sense of the ways in which individuals bear and know the, weight of history. In these poems, filaments of emotion connect the domain of intimate pleasuresand losses with the larger cultural universe in which the agonies and inspirations are collective -issues she also addresses in scholarly publications devoted to nineteenth-century African-Americanliterature and culture.Elizabeth has been a powerful, energizing presence within and beyond the English concentration. As a teacher of African-American cultural studies and gender studies, she has had an enormousimpact on her students. In her role as a teacher of the writing of poetry, she not only helps studentsto develop their craft but also works energetically to build and sustain a sense of community amongthe creative writers in the English concentration. She structures her pedagogy so as to deepen herstudents experience of writing as an ongoing endeavor; her students read one another's work, givereadings that are wonderful public events, and, if they go on to develop careers as poets, continueto benefit from her guidance and support. Most of her students remember the experience of working with her as the very finest thing they take away from their time in the College. The candidate will be presented in absentia by Bruce Redford, Professor, The Department of English Language and Literature, and the College.GREGORY L. HILLHOUSEAssociate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and the CollegeGregory Hillhouse is a synthetic inorganic chemist who works in the area of organometallic chemistry located at the boundary between inorganic and organic chemistry. His work has focused onthe trapping of small molecules containing transition metal centers and the interactions of small, highly reactive molecules with transition metal complexes. His scholarly activity has implicationsin several areas of chemistry, both pure and applied. In many ways, Greg's activities in research and teaching are inseparable. Working in the Hillhouseresearch group is one of total absorption, both professional and social, whether it is for a summer, one year or three. His passionate interest in developing students as chemists and well-roundedscholars is legion, as is his patience with the struggles of the beginning researcher. For many, themarvel of making new molecules was first experienced in his laboratories, and played an importantrole in enormously enriching the undergraduate experience and in launching solid careers. For others, the joys of conducting research started here with the early expectation of high levels of qualityand commitment. Many faculty work with undergraduate students but Greg has shown extraordinary skill in developing their intellectual and practical talents such that they learn the craft ofchemist, researcher and teacher. The candidate will be presented by Jeremy K. Burdett, Chairman of the Department of Chemistry.LAWRENCE MCENERNEYDirector of University Writing ProgramsWhen Lawrence McEnerney began teaching here as a graduate student more than fifteen years ago,he displayed a talent for understanding not just how students learn, but what makes them want tolearn. When the Advanced Writing Program needed an instructor with not just experience, but skilland dedication, we did not wonder whom to ask. Lawrence understands what it means to teachwriting at the University of Chicago.Lawrence is Director of the College Writing Programs. In addition to teaching juniors and seniorsin the Little Red Schoolhouse, he began teaching in the Humanities Core to understand our firstyear students better. Over the years he has taught in almost every Core Humanities sequence. Heprobably understands better than anyone in the College how our first year students think and learn. He has shared this understanding of how our students think and learn with a next generation ofteachers. By training Writing Interns and helping graduate students learn to teach with the samededication and skill, Lawrence's influence extends beyond his own classes and his own students. The candidate will be presented by Joseph M. Williams, Professor in the Departments of English Language andLiterature, Linguistics, and the College.NATHAN TARCOVProfessor in the Department of Political Science, the Committee on Social Thought, and the CollegeNathan's erudition is rare. The range of his courses' topics commands attention: Plato andXenophon, Thucydides and Aristotle, Livy and Machiavelli, Spinoza and Hobbes, Locke andRousseau, the American Founders and beyond. It is twenty years since Nathan Tarcov arrived at the University of Chicago, young but by nomeans inexperienced. Having honed his skills at Harvard, he was prepared for the challenges ofChicago. But here, in the College, the pace was more deliberate, more oriented toward texts, andmore focused on exploration through conversation. Teaching here would suit him very well.Disregarding the counsel of Machiavelli, whom he has translated, Nathan makes profuse gifts outof his own riches. He fully deserves the gratitude of all.The candidate will be presented by Ralph Lerner, Professor in the Committee on Social Thought and the SocialSciences Collegiate Division.Ever rarer is his success in carrying his learning so lightly. His :wry manner, unassuming bearingand ready wit conceal the deep study that informs his teaching, writing, and even ordinary conversation. He teaches from his strength, informed by his reflection on his experiences in government. Students at all levels -- colleagues as well -- have found Nathan a most generous helper, anattentive listener, a patient editor, a sound counselor, and, in any number of cases, a precious friend.Astonishingly, the teacher has been able to combine this giving of time and energies with an endless cycle of administrative services to the University.PHILIP S. ULINSKIProfessor in the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy and the Committee on NeurobiologyPhilip Ulinski is a neurobiologist who studies the visual system of reptiles, specifically turtles, inorder to learn how an animal's visual world is perceived and interpreted by its brain. Even in turtles, the brain is a complicated organ, making this a difficult task. Over the course of his scientificcareer, Phil has established himsef as an expert on the evolution and function of vertebrate nervoussystems.More recently, Phil has developed an integrative undergraduate biology sequence that emphasizesthe study of biology in the context of the physical sciences. This five-quarter sequence has achievedremarkable success due to Phil's tireless efforts and wisdom in devising a curriculum that revealscommon principles underlying the physical and biological world and which fosters student excellence in the classroom and laboratory.Phil's belief that scholarship depends on dialogue and intellectual exchange among students and faculty is at the core of this success. Faculty teaching in this sequence interact with students in the laboratories. Students learn from these interactions what it means to be a scientist and how to do science, two things that are often lost in the classroom. They learn to ask important questions of thebiological and physical world, how to define problems to study, and how to begin scientific investigation of those problems.Phil's enthusiasm for his research and his excitement about science is evident. Through Phil's dedication and outstanding efforts, we can be assured that these students will have the broad interdisciplinary training necessary for becoming our leading scientists of the future. The candidate will be preseneted by Andrew Biewener, Chairman of the Department of Organismal Biology andAnatomy.s.For the Degree of Doctor of ScienceTHE CONFERRING OF THE HONORARY DEGREEThe degree will be conferred by President Hugo F. Sonnenschein.EMILY SUE SAVAGE-RUMBAUGHProfessor of Biology and PsychologyGeorgia State UniversityEmily Sue Savage-Rumbaugh is the uncontested leader in research on language competence and thecognitive capacities of bonobos, chimpanzees and other nonhuman primates. She demonstratedthat bonobos and chimpanzees can comprehend spoken English and command simple grammaticalrules. Her research has greatly clarified what great apes understand and how they employ symbolsto accomplish goals. In the laboratory she has conducted novel experiments that have advancedknowledge on such thought-provoking issues as what it means to be human and how closely alliedwe are with the great apes. Recently, she inaugurated field studies of naturalistic bonobo communication. Her work also has benefited linguistically challenged people.Savage-Rumbaugh is truly a teacher of teachers via her many public lectures, scientific and layfilms, and voluminous publications. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, she is spearheadinginternational efforts to conserve bonobos and their habitats, and to promote scientific research thatwill stimulate local economies and encourage an appreciation for the rain forests and their nonhu-man inhabitants. ..The candidate will be presented by Russell H. Tuttle, Professor in the Department of Anthropology, the BiologicalSciences and Social Sciences Collegiate Divisions, the Committee on Evolutionary Biology, and the Morris FishbeinCenter for the History of Science and Medicine.THE CONFERRING OF ACADEMIC DEGREESCandidates for Degrees will be presented in the following order:Please reftain from applause until the President leads the audience in acknowledging the awarding0/ degrees qfier his remarks. The Dean of the College John W. "ACADEMIC ATTIREAcademic attire originates in the everyday dress of twelfth-century Europe where the first modern universities were founded at Bologna, Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge. Over time, while everyday fashionschanged, universities retained the earlier style for formal attire to be worn by students, graduates, faculty, and university officials on ceremonial occasions. The styles of academic attire worn at Oxford and Cambridge were widely used in the United Statesuntil 1895, when the Intercollegiate Code, establishing a unified system of American academic attire, wasadopted by most American colleges and universities.Like military uniforms, academic attire indicates the rank, office, and institutional affiliations of thewearer. The basic elements of American academic attire are the robe, the hood, and the cap.The style of the robe indicates the rank of the wearer's degree or, in some cases, the wearer's office: aplain black robe for bachelors; a black robe with long, crescent-shaped sleeves for masters; and a black robewith velvet front panels and velvet bars on the sleeves for doctors or university officials. Beginning at theSpring Convocation in 1965, the doctor's robe of the University of Chicago has been in the school color, maroon. The hood represents the specific degree and the institution by which it was granted. The size of thehood indicates the rank. The color of the velvet border indicates the area of study (white for arts, yellowfor science, blue for philosophy, green for medicine, purple for law, and red for divinity). The color of thelining indicates the institution.Black mortarboards are worn by recipients of each type of degree. At the University of Chicago, recipients of doctoral degrees wear octagonal velvet tams.THE MARSHAL AND THE STUDENT MARSHALSThe office of Marshal of the University was established in 1895 to assist with the conduct of official ceremonies. Until 1903 the Marshal was an undergraduate upperclassman, assisted by other undergraduateupperclassmen and by members of the faculty. Since 1903 the Marshal has been a member of the faculty, assisted by other members of the faculty and by undergraduate upperclassmen. The Marshal, Vice-Marshal, and Assistant Marshals of the University of Chicago wear maroon doctor's robes with alternating black velvet and gold metallic bars on the sleeves. Prior to receiving their bachelor's degrees, Student Marshals wear maroon bachelor's robes with maroon mortarboards. After receiving their degrees, they wear black mortarboards.Today's Student Marshals are appointed by the President of the University in recognition of theirexcellent scholarship and leadership. Appointment as a Student Marshal is the highest honor conferred bythe University upon undergraduate students.THE UNIVERSITY f CHICAGO MOTET CHOIRELLEFSON, ConductorLORNA P. STRAUSRONALD A.
