Four Hundred Forty-eighthCONVOCATIOTheSPRJNGSECOND SESSIONJune ThirteenthA.D. Nineteen Hundred Ninety-sevenROCKEFELLER MEMORIAL CHAPELTHE UNiVERSITY OF CHICAGO UK'{JUN 2 71997THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGOThe University of Chicago was founded in 1892 by John D. Rockefeller, biblical scholar William RaineyHarper, and Chicago-area Baptists. The University's Articles of Incorporation commit the institution toexcellence in both undergraduate and graduate education, an explicit policy of co-education, and an atmosphere of non-sectarianism.Harper agreed to become the first president of the University on the condition that he be allowed toestablish a university that would be unlike any other. He conceived of a university that would emphasizethe creation of new knowledge and "make the work of investigation primary." To this end, the Universityhas always been dedicated to excellence in research and has sought the most distinguished scholars for itsfaculty.Over the years, the University and its faculty have had a major impact on American higher education.Faculty scholarship has shaped several essential disciplines and established important and distinctive"Chicago schools" in such disparate fields as economics, evolutionary biology, sociology, literary criticism, anthropology, and law and economics. Sixty-seven Nobel laureates have been members of the faculty, researchers, or students at the University. Programmatic innovations originating at the University includethe invention of the four-quarter system, the establishment of a coherent program of general education forundergraduates, the initiation of a full-time medical school teaching faculty, and the development of extension courses and programs in the liberal arts for adults. The University includes an undergraduate College, four graduate divisions (Biological Sciences,Humanities, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences), six graduate professional schools (Graduate School ofBusiness, Divinity School, Law School, Pritzker School of Medicine, Irving B. Harris Graduate School ofPublic Policy Studies, and School of Social Service Administration), and a diverse collection of academicsupport units and resources including libraries, research institutes, clinics, museums, theaters, and a university press. The University has a faculty of more than 1,200 and an enrollment of over 12,000 students. The 200 acre campus is located along the Midway Plaisance in Hyde Park, a residential community on LakeMichigan south of Chicago's Loop. .The University's English Collegiate Gothic buildings, built of gray Indiana limestone, were designedto frame shady, green quadrangles. Contemporary campus buildings have been designed in keeping withthe original Gothic theme while drawing from the tradition of great modern architecture for which thecity of Chicago is famous. Eero Saarinen and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed striking buildings forthe Law School and the School of Social Service Administration. The National Trust for HistoricPreservation praised the University for its insistence on architectural continuity over a "a century of socialand academic change. "On July 1,1993, Hugo F. Sonnenschein became the University's eleventh President.ORDER OF EXERCISESFor the Conferring of DegreesThree o'clockHUGO F. Kersten, Jr. Professorin the Division of the Physical Sciences, the Enrico Fermi Institute, and the CollegeMelvyn Shochet is the first to hold the Elaine M. and Samuel D. Kersten Jr. Professorship in the PhysicalSciences. An expert in experimental high-energy physics, Shochet was a member of, and spokesman for,the team that discovered the top quark in 1994. The top quark may have been the last remaining undiscovered fundamental building block of matter. Finding it confirms physicists' so-called Standard Model, the theory of the particles and forces that determine the fundamental nature of matter and energy. Shochethad served since 1988 as co-spokesman for the 440-member Collider Detector at Fermilab collaboration, which published the first direct evidence for the top quark in 1994. He is the author or co-author of morethan 120 articles on elementary particle physics.A recipient of the Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Award for Excellence inUndergraduate Teaching in 1978, Shochet has taught at the University since 973, when he joined the faculty as Instructor. He was appointed Professor in 1985. He also served as a visiting scientist at FermiNational Accelerator Laboratory from 1988 until 1995. He received his A.B. in 1966 from the Universityof Pennsylvania and both his M.A. and his Ph.D. in 1972 from Princeton.THE ANTHEMAlleluya Psallat Peter AstonAlleluia: Sings this merry company: Strike the cymbals,Sound the zither. Sonnenschein.JEAN BOTTEROMaitre de Recherche emerite, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique andDirecteur d'Etudes emerite, Ecole Pratique des Hautes EtudesJean Bottero is one of the rare true humanists who has clear sight of the place of his discipline in the broad expanse of humanistic endeavor, a firm grasp of the whole form anddirection of his discipline, and an intimate mastery of its minutest details. Schooled in philosophy, trained in Old Testament studies and Semitic philology, and expert in the philology of Sumerian and Akkadian texts, he has expanded our understanding of the civilizations of the ancient Near East. His editions of cuneiform texts are philologically impeccable. His beautifully crafted interpretations and translations of Sumerian and Akkadian religious and mythological texts havemade these works accessible to scholars of many disciplines as well as to a broader audience. As a historian of religion, Borrero has grappled with questions of monotheism -what he called in a beautiful book that has had immense success the. "birth of god." Mostrecently, Bottero/s culinary flair and skills combined with his philological acumen in producing the award winning Mesopotamian Culinary Texts. The candidate will be presented by Erica Reiner, the John A. Wilson Distinguished Service Professor Emerita in theOriental Institute and the Departments of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and Linguistics.Bottero/s writings illuminate Mesopotamian man's encounters with the transcendental andthe divine, the place of Mesopotamian experience in the growth of rationality, and theeffect of Mesopotamian writing on the power of words among us ..For the Degree of Doctor of Humane LettersEDOUARD A. JEAUNEAUMaitre de Recherche Premiere Classe EmeriteCentre National de la Recherche ScientifiqueEdouard Jeauneau has transformed our understanding of thinkers who were pivotal in theformation of European culture. By recovering the texts and speculations of leadingmedieval Platonists, he has rewritten key chapters in the history of education and philosophy and laid open the foundations and inspiration of major artistic, intellectual, and literary achievements. Noone else in our time has made as far-reaching a contribution to thehistory of Platonism in ninth to twelfth century Europe.Jeauneau has brought forth monumental editions, commentaries, and works of synthesis.Over the past decade, he has used the thousand year old manuscripts of John ScottusEriugena to set this misunderstood thinker into the continuum of philosophical discourseon Being and Nature. With inspired joy and success, Edouard Jeauneau reaches across theconventional boundaries of history, paleography, philology, and philosophy. His harveststands as a model of humanistic achievement, and as a sure foundation and stimulus forcontinued reflection and debate. The candidate will be presented by Michael 1. Allen, Assistant Professor in the Department of Classical Languagesand Literatures. For the Degree of Doctor of Humane LettersPIER VINCENZO MENGALDOProfessore di Storia della Lingua ItalianaUniversita degli Studi di PadovaPier Vincenzo Mengaldo is the most distinguished Italian critic of his generation. His workas literary critic and editor ranges from medieval and early Renaissance to nineteenth-andtwentieth -century literatureAmong the texts Mengaldo has edited areDante/s De vulgari eloquentia and the collectedverse of fifteenth-century poet Matteo Maria Boiardo. Both are models of textual criticism. As literary critic he has provided new understandings of Renaissance poetry inNorthern Italian courts and of the place of the poetry within the Petrarchan tradition. The major focus of Mengaldo/s work, however, has been the modern period. His threevolume La tradizione del Novecento, an indispensible guide for understanding Italian literatureof this century, examines how poetic language informs tradition and how the choices a poetmakes within tradition convey ideological messages.Mengaldo has had a profound impact in another important area. His anthology of modernItalian poetry, published in the seventies, challenged the traditional canon by includingdialect poets. The anthology immediately created widespread debate and controversy.Today, however, Mengaldo/s 'canon' has been accepted by everyone, and his understanding of the relationship of dialect literature to standard Italian literature -- a problem as oldas Italian literature itself -- has won general consensus. The candidate will be presented by Paolo A. Cherchi, Professor in the Department of Romance Languages andLiteratures and the College. For the Degree of Doctor of ScienceCARL E. WIEMANProfessor of PhysicsThe University of Colorado at BoulderCarl Wieman is considered to be one of the premier physicists of his generation. Hisresearch in experimental atomic physics addresses important and fundamental questionsand his results have had a widespread impact. Wieman's work is characterized by superbexperimental techniques, careful analysis and brilliant insights.Wieman has achieved perhaps the two most important successes in atomic physics duringthe past two decades. The first of these was a series of experiments to measure parity violation in atomic cesium. These elegant experiments not only showed a definitive effect, butthey were of sufficient precision to provide important constraints on the standard model ofparticle physics.Another extraordinary achievement by Wieman and his research group was the productionof a Bose-Einstein condensate. Their successful realization of a goal that has long eludedphysicists was an experimental tour de force. It has opened up an exciting new field ofresearch. It is extraordinary that these pathbreaking results have been achieved by the same person. The candidate will be presented by Roland Winston, Professor in the Department of Physics, the Enrico FermiInstitute, and the College.THE CONFERRING OF DEGREESCandidates for degrees will be presented in alphabetical order by degrees in thefollowing academic units:In the College by Professor Philip C. BODENDean of Rockefeller Memorial ChapelTHE RECESSIONALACADEMIC ATTIREAcademic attire originates in the everyday dress of twelfth-century Europe where the first modern universities were founded at Bologna, Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge. Over time, while everyday fashionschanged, universities retained the earlier style for formal attire to be worn by students, graduates, faculty, and university officials on ceremonial occasions. The styles of academic attire worn at Oxford and Cambridge were widely used in the United Statesuntil 1895, when the Intercollegiate Code, establishing a unified system of American academic attire, wasadopted by most American colleges and universities.Like military uniforms, academic attire indicates the rank, office, and institutional affiliations of thewearer. The basic elements of American academic attire are the robe, the hood, and the cap.The style of the robe indicates the rank of the wearer's degree or, in some cases, the wearer's office: aplain black robe for bachelors; a black robe with long, crescent-shaped sleeves for masters; and a black robewith velvet front panels and velvet bars on the sleeves for doctors or university officials. Beginning at theSpring Convocation in 1965, the doctor's robe of the University of Chicago has been in the school color, maroon. The hood represents the specific degree and the institution by which it was granted. The size of thehood indicates the rank. The color of the velvet border indicates the area of study (white for arts, yellowfor science, blue for philosophy, green for medicine, purple for law, and red for divinity). The color of thelining indicates the institution.Black mortarboards are worn by recipients of each type of degree. At the University of Chicago, recipients of doctoral degrees wear octagonal velvet tams.THE MARSHAL AND THE STUDENT MARSHALSThe office of Marshal of the University was established in 1895 to assist with the conduct of official ceremonies. Until 1903 the Marshal was an undergraduate upperclassman, assisted by other undergraduateupperclassmen and by members of the faculty. Since 1903 the Marshal has been a member of the faculty, assisted by other members of the faculty and by undergraduate upperclassmen. 'The Marshal, Vice-Marshal, and Assistant Marshals of the University of Chicago wear maroon doctor's robes with alternating black velvet and gold metallic bars on the sleeves. Prior to receiving their bachelor's degrees, Student Marshals wear maroon bachelor's robes with maroon mortarboards. After receiving their degrees, they wear black mortarboards.Today's Student Marshals are appointed by the President of the University in recognition of theirexcellent scholarship and leadership. Appointment as a Student Marshal is the highest honor conferred bythe University upon undergraduate students.THE UNIVERSITY OF ICAGO MOTET CHOIRTED COHENRICHARD H. HELMHOLZBERNARD McGINNJOHN R.
