Nineteen Hundred Ninety-seven ..ROCKEFELLER MEMOR AL CHAPELiRE U\V£n ni Lm t;';JUN 2 71951THE UNIVERSIT_Y OF CHICAGOThe University of Chicago was founded in 1892 by john D. Rockefeller, biblical scholar William RaineyHarper, and Chicago-area Baptists. The University's Articles of Incorporation commit the institution toexcellence in both undergraduate andgraduate education, an explicit policy ofco-education, and an atmosphere of non-sectarianism.Harper agreed to become the first president of the University on the condition that he be allowed toestablish a university that would be unlike any other. He conceived of a university that would emphasizethe creation of new knowledge and "make the work of investigation primary." To this end, the Universityhas always been dedicated to excellence in research and has sought the most distinguished scholars for itsfaculty.Over the years, the University and its faculty have had a major impact on American higher education.Faculty scholarship has shaped several essential 'disciplines and established important and distinctive"Chicago schools" in such disparate fields as economics, evolutionary biology, sociology, literary criticism, anthropology, and law and economics. Sixty-seven Nobel laureates have been members of the faculty, researchers, or students at the University. Programmatic innovations originating at the University includethe invention of the four-quarter system, the establishment of a coherent program of general education forundergraduates, the initiation of a full-time medical school teaching faculty, and the development of extension courses and programs in the liberal arts for adults. The University includes an undergraduate College, four graduate divisions (Biological Sciences,Humanities, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences), six graduate professional schools (Graduate School ofBusiness, Divinity School, Law School, Pritzker Schoolof Medicine, Irving B. Harris Graduate School ofPublic Policy Studies, and School of Social Service Administration), and a diverse collection of academicsupport units and resources including libraries, research institutes, clinics, museums, theaters, and a university press. The University has a faculty of more than 1,200 and an enrollment of over 12,000 students. The 200 acre campus is located along the Midway Plaisance in Hyde Park, a residential community on LakeMichigan south of Chicago's Loop. The University's English Collegiate Gothic buildings, built of gray Indiana limestone, were designedto frame shady, green quadrangles. Contemporary campus buildings have been designed in keeping withthe original Gothic theme while drawing from the- tradition of great modern architecture for which thecity of Chicago is famous. Eero Saarinen and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed striking buildings forthe Law School and the School of Social Service Administr.ation. The National Trust for HistoricPreservation praised the University for its insistence on architectural continuity over a "a century of socialand academic change."On July 1, 1993, Hugo F. Sonnenschein became the University's eleventh President.ORDlER Of lEXlERCnSlESFor the Conferring of DegreesTen o'clockHUGO F. Kersten, Jr. Professorin the Division of the Physical Sciences, the Enrico Fermi Institute, and the CollegeMelvyn Shochet is the first to hold the Elaine M. and Samuel D. Kersten Jr. Professorship in the PhysicalSciences. An expert in experimental high-energy physics, Shochet was a member of, and spokesman for,the team that discovered the top quark in 1994. The top quark may have been the last remaining undiscovered fundamental building block of matter. Finding it confirms physicists' so-called Standard Model, the theory of the particles and forces that determine the fundamental nature of matter and energy. Shochethad served since 1988 as co-spokesman for the 440-member Collider Detector at Fermilab collaboration, which published the first direct evidence for the top quark in 1994. He is the author or co-author of morethan 120 articles on elementary particle physics.A recipient of the Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Award for Excellence inUndergraduate Teaching in 1978, Shochet has taught at the University since 197, when he joined thefaculty as Instructor. He was appointed Professor in 1985. He also served as a visiting scientist at FermiNational Accelerator Laboratory from 1988 until 1995. He received his A.B. in 1966 from the Universityof Pennsylvania and both his M.A. and his Ph.D. in 1972 from Princeton.THE ANTHEMAlleluya Psallat Peter AstonAlleluia: Sings this merry company: Strike the cymbals,Sound the zither. Sonnenschein. For the Degree of Doctor of LawsREINHARD ZIMMERMANNProfessor of Civil Law, Roman Law, and Historical Comparative LawUniversitdt RegensburgReinhard Zimmermann is a master scholar and teacher of the Roman legal tradition. In a stream ofbooks and articles, and most particularly in his magisterial The Law of Obligations: Roman Foundationsof the Civilian Tradition, he has explored and explained the importance. of Roman law in the development of the Western legal tradition. Together with canon law, Roman law provided the common basis for legal education in universities throughout Europe from the twelfth- through nineteenth-centuries. For good and for ill, it also exerted its powerful influence over ways of legalthought and practice. Even English and American common law were touched by its hand. Noother scholar has traced this influence with the precision, sophistication, judgement, elegance andbreadth of Zimmermann. If Zimmermann is correct, the power of the civilian legal tradition is not yet spent. In the late twentieth century, when European states are moving hesitantly toward unity, Zimmermann is the leaderamong scholars who maintain that real unity in legal systems must find its animating spirit in ashared legal culture, with roots in the historical civilian tradition.Zimmermann's scholarship sets a standard for all comparative legal historians. The candidate will be presented by Richard H. Helmholz, the Ruth Wyatt Rosenson Professor in the Law School.THE CONFERRING OF DEGREESCandidates for Degrees will be presented in alphabetical order by degrees in thefollowing academic units:In the Law School by Dean Douglas G. BODENDean of Rockefeller Memorial ChapelTHE RECESSIONALToccata in F Major, opus 42(The Congregation remains standing through the Alma Mater, the Benediction, and the Recessional.) Charles-Marie WidorACADEMIC ATTIREAcademic attire originates in the everyday dress of twelfth-century Europe where the first modern universities were founded at Bologna, Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge. Over time, while everyday fashionschanged, universities retained the earlier style for formal attire to be worn by students, graduates, faculty, and university officials on ceremonial occasions. The styles of academic attire worn at Oxford and Cambridge were widely used in the United Statesuntil 1895, when the Intercollegiate Code, establishing a unified system of American academic attire, wasadopted by most American colleges and universities.Like military uniforms, academic attire indicates the rank, office, and institutional affiliations of thewearer. The basic elements of American academic attire are the robe, the hood, and the cap.The style of the robe indicates the rank of the wearer's degree or, in some cases, the wearer's office: aplain black robe for bachelors; a black robe with long, crescent-shaped sleeves for masters; and a black robewith velvet front panels and velvet bars on the sleeves for doctors or university officials. Beginning at theSpring Convocation in 1965, the doctor's robe of the University of Chicago has been in the school color, maroon. The hood represents the specific degree and the institution by which it was granted. The size of thehood indicates the rank. The color of the velvet border indicates the area of study (white for arts, yellowfor science, blue for philosophy, green for medicine, purple for law, and red for divinity). The color of thelining indicates the institution.Black mortarboards are worn by recipients of each type of degree. At the University of Chicago, recipients of doctoral degrees wear octagonal velvet tams.THE MARSHAL AND THE STUDENT MARSHALSThe office of Marshal of the University was established in 1895 to assist with the conduct of official ceremonies. Until 1903 the Marshal was an undergraduate upperclassman, assisted by other undergraduateupperclassmen and by members of the faculty. Since 1903 the Marshal has been a member of the faculty, assisted by other members of the faculty and by undergraduate upperclassmen. The Marshal, Vice-Marshal, and Assistant Marshals of the University of Chicago wear maroon doctor's robes with alternating black velvet and gold metallic bars on the sleeves. Prior to receiving their bachelor's degrees, Student Marshals wear maroon bachelor's robes with maroon mortarboards. After receiving their degrees, they wear black mortarboards.Today's Student Marshals are appointed by the President of the University in recognition of theirexcellent scholarship and leadership. Appointment as a Student Marshal is the highest honor conferred bythe University upon undergraduate students.TED COHENRICHARD H. HELMHOLZBERNARD McGINNJOHN R. SCHUERMANHERMAN L. SINAIKO LORNA P.
