His lifetime of work on human communication and interaction has provided critical findings about the kind of information that is revealed bybodily movements and facial expressions during interpersonal relationships, the relation of this to speech, and the assistance this information provides in diagnosingpsychopathology. His study of interpersonal deception has also shown how the bodyand the face reflect characteristics of the person who is lying, the lie that is being told, and the target of the lie. His ideas have provided the common language amongbehavioral scientists interested in human interaction. His contributions are reflectednot only in his profound scholarship but also in the international community of scholarswhom he has brought together and in the number of young, brilliant researchers whohave profited by his personal tutelage or his example. The University of Chicago cantake pride in the accomplishments of the young man who came to study at the age offifteen for three years in the Hutchins' College and went on to live the life of a scholarand teacher committed to the intellectual and social values that he acquired duringthose formative years. The candidate will be presented by Thomas R. Trabasso, Irving B. Harris Professor, Departmentsof Psychology and Education and the College. For the Degree of Doctor of ScienceULFGRENANDERL. Herbert Ballou University Professor EmeritusDivision of Applied Mathematics, Brown UniversityProfessor Ulf Grenander is an extraordinarily innovative statistician and appliedmathematician. He has a rare ability to integrate elements and structures from variousfields of statistics and mathematics and thereby to create new paradigms of the mostoriginal, profound and esthetic nature. His work in the 1950s was a cornerstone in thedevelopment of modern time series analysis. In the 1960s he turned his attention toprobabilities on algebraic structures, or probabilities on groups. This work, summarized in his 1963 book, was ahead of its time. Grenander's work in abstract inference, orinference about random processes, spans three decades, from his 1950 Ph.D. thesis tohis 1981 book on the topic. The method of sieves, central to non-parametric regressionand density estimation, is Grenander's creation. Starting in the early 1970s, he turnedhis attention to the immensely challenging problems connected with pattern theory, pattern recognition, and image analysis. This was unexplored intellectual territory atthe time, and Grenander's clear conceptual framework charted the way for themathematical discussion of pattern over the next two decades. He continues to set thepace in formulating problems and inventing solutions in the area of pattern analysis. The candidate will be presented by Peter McCullagh, Professor and Chairman, Department ofStatistics.4142For the Degree if Doctor if Humane LettersELISABETH LICHTENBERGERPrcfessor if Geography, University if ViennaProfessor Elisabeth Lichtenberger has explored new paths in the many-sided profoundinvestigations of the city of Vienna, especially in the analysis of historical transformations, spatial patterns of distribution, social, political, and economic structures, and thephysical legacy of the built environment. These findings and methods have beenapplied fruitfully to studies of the urban fabric of other modern European cities and tourban phenomena in general. Her innovative regional studies of Austria and Alpinelands have had wide influence.
