SonnenscheinFor the Degree if Doctor if Humane Letters:IHSAN ABBASPrcfessor EmeritusAmerican University if BeirutPerhaps no single Arabist or Islamicist of this century has rendered the distinguished servicesto the field of Arabic and Islamic studies which Professor Ihsan Abbas has, both in quality andquantity. In over seventy books and eighty articles, his work during the past four decades hasbrought into light, for the first time in the history of modern Arabic scholarship, scores ofunknown Medieval Arabic manuscripts, thereby laying the foundation of the modern Arabiclibrary and presenting seminal models of proper, scientific editing for scholars of the field. At thesame time, and with a breadth unmatched, he has embarked on investigating innumerable areasof Arabic literature and Islamic thought, ranging from language to literary criticism, history, biography, geography, political thought, law, and religion, and encompassing most of the landsin which Islamic civilization thrived, from Spain in the West to Central Asia in the East. Theseworks have become standard, influential, and yet constantly provocative. Nor has Ihsan Abbasneglected the area of translation. In recognition of the contribution of all nations to humanthought, and in deep appreciation of the universal humanistic tradition, he has translated intoArabic, with remarkable ingenuity, numerous works, all of which have become models oftranslation, admired but never surpassed. The candidate will be presented by Wadad A. Kadi, Projessor and Chairman, Department ofNear Eastern Languages and Civilizations. For the Degree if Doctor if Laws:FRANCIS A. ALLENProfessor if Law and Hubert C. Hurst Eminent Scholar at theUniversity if FloridaProfessor Francis Allen's scholarship has profoundly influenced both theory and practice in thecriminal law, drawing together insights from law, philosophy and the social sciences to serve theends of Justice.Professor Allen has decisively shaped the most modern code of substantive criminal law, nowadopted in more than two-thirds of the States, and it has also significantly influenced practicewithin the federal system. Allen was the principal architect of the provision oflegal assistance toindigent accused persons, today available in every American jurisdiction. His early work onconstitutional restraints on police and prosecutorial practice framed the current basic nationalrules of criminal procedure; and his writings on the purposes of punishment have had a profoundeffect on both sentencing and correctional practices. All contemporary scholarship in these areasof criminal law and procedure stands in the shadow of his achievement. The candidate will be presented by Norval Morris, Julius Kreeger Professor, Law SchoolRICHARD H. HOLMHiggins Professor of ChemistryHarvard UniversityFor the Degree of Doctor of Science:YVES COPPENSProfessor de Paleoanthropologie et PrehistoireCollege de FranceDirecteur du Centre de Recherches AnthropologiquesMusee de l'HommeThe paleo anthropological expeditions that Professor Yves Coppens conducted in Chad andEthiopia produced a treasure trove of novel hominid fossils, tons of other vertebrate andbotanical specimens, and evidence that lithic technology predates 2 million years ago. He isnominator of several species of the Hominidae-including Australopithecus cifarensis-and ofother exotic large mammals.Professor Coppens' masterful biostratigraphic analysis of the Omo River Basin established anenduring referent for dating other Pilo-Pleistocene localities.Employing an encyclopedic knowledge of mammalian evolution in the Pilocene and earlyPleistocene, Professor Coppens advocated that more than one species of the Hominidae isrepresented by the numerous hominid specimens, which have been lumped by other paleoanthropologists in Australopithecus afarensis.Based on geomorphological information, Professor Coppens hypothesized "the East Sidestory:" that rifting of the African continent led to more open ecosystems culminating in easternAfrican grasslands and woodlands, as opposed to the more densely forested areas of central andwestern Africa. This probably contributed to the evolutionary development of bipedalism in theHominidae and their divergence from the forest-dwelling African apes.Professor Coppens has published numerous books and scientific papers that span the scope ofpaleo anthropology. He has served as mentor to many doctoral students, who have made majorcontributions to paleo anthropology, vertebrate paleontology, and primatology over the past twodecades. The candidate will be presented by Russell H. Tuttle) Professor of Anthropology and in theCommittee on Evolutionary Biology, the Morris Fishbein Center for History of Science andMedicine) and the College. For the Degree of Doctor of Science:Professor Richard Holm ranks among the most important innovators in chemistry. Sometwenty years ago when the role of metals in life processes was a matter of unrestrainedspeculation, Richard Holm demonstrated with penetrating simplicity that the structure andfunction of metalloproteins could be understood to a great degree without recourse to theprotein itself He demonstrated that the complex binding sites of metals, which were thenthought to be a consequence of the larger protein structure, could be assembled without theconstraints of the protein structure. This observation had a profound impact on the emergingfield ofbioinorganic chemistry, for it demonstrated that the understanding of complex biologicalsystems was possible by simple chemical methods. Richard Holm has remained the leadingfigure in his field, continuing to provide new insights and ideas. The candidate will be presented by Brice Bosnich, Professor, Department of Chemistry. For the Degree if Doctor if Laws:LEONID HURWICZRegents Projessor Emeritus if EconomicsUniversity if MinnesotaProfessor Leonid Hurwicz has made innumerable contributions to economic theory but isbest known as the pioneer in the study of different economic organizations-"mechanisms,"within a common analytical framework. In this context an economic organization may be a firmor an entire economy. He initiated the formal study of the informational and incentive propertiesof economic organizations and the optimality of outcomes. He was interested in clarifying theconcept of information decentralization and, in particular, re-examining the debate betweencentral planning and competitive markets.Professor Hurwicz introduced the concept of incentive compatibility of a mechanism interms of Nash equilibria of a game played by the economic agents. His method of analysis wascrucial in the development of "information economics" and its application to industrial organization, finance, labor economics, macroeconomics, public finance and virtually all of the appliedfields. His work has helped to focus research on a fundamental question, namely, how a societyshould organize its economic activities. The candidate will be presented by Robert M. Townsend, Professor, Department of Economics andthe College. For the Degree if Doctor if Humane Letters:BRUNO NETTLProjessor Emeritus if Music and AnthropologyUniversity if Illinois at Urbana-ChampaignProfessor Bruno Nettl's research and publications have contributed fundamentally to theemergence of ethnomusicology as an international field of comparative research during thesecond half of the twentieth century. By drawing on the methodologies of diverse fields in thehumanities and social sciences, he forged new paths for the modern discourse about the relationof music to culture, and of musical life to human life. In his earliest research - on NativeAmerican music and the folk music of Europe and North America-Professor Nettl recognizedthat local musical practices could not be isolated from regional, national, and internationalprocesses of change. He later expanded the scope of his research to include the classical musics ofthe Middle East and South Asia, as well as the musical life of the modern city. From these diverseareas of research emerged the fundamental concepts and methodologies for the entire field ofethnomusicology, and, indeed, these influence both his many students, as well as the nextgeneration of scholars educated by those students. The candidate will be presented by Philip V. Bohlman, Assistant Professor, Department of Musicand the College. For the Degree of Doctor of Science:I. M. SINGERInstitute Professor of MathematicsMassachusetts Institute of TechnologyProfessor I. M. Singer has been a driving force behind two major developments in mathematics in this century. Differential geometry is a subject that has evolved over hundreds of years andhas been the most successful approach to understanding basic geometric issues in mathematicsand the physical world. Professor Singer pioneered the application of techniques of analysis, particularly partial differential equations, to problems in differential geometry and topology. This development had an enormous impact on both subjects, greatly expanding their scope andthe breadth of their applications. One cannot think of differential geometry in the same waysince the development and influence of Professor Singer's ideas. Professor Singer's ideas andinfluence have been pivotal in the recent and rapidly expanding interactions between differentialand algebraic geometry and certain areas of theoretical physics. This domain is enjoying anoutburst of activity that has led to major new insights for both subjects. The candidate will be presented by Robert J Zimmer, Professor, Department of Mathematics. For the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters:ROMILA THAPARProfessor of Ancient Indian History, EmeritaJawaharlal Nehru University, New DelhiProfessor Romila Thapar led a post-independence intellectual revolution that transformed theinterpretation of ancient Indian history. Her History oj India, for thirty years the standard work, used social and economic history to reinterpret an era previously understood in terms ofBrahminical high culture texts. She began the project of disassembling the homogeneous, uncontested view of a unitary Hindu high culture. Utilizing transformatory new methodologiesand perspectives from numismatics, archeology and linguistics, she produced innovativescholarship that provided new perspectives on texts, on the interpretation of material culture andon the cultural construction of history. No history is apolitical. Professor Thapar has given Indian history a reading that suggests theways in which dominant traditions have been subject to contesting alternatives. From herearliest work on the emperor Ashoka, her history has featured openness and multiplicity withrespect to India's religious traditions. She has shown this in her teaching and scholarship. She is a founding member of that astonishing new generation of world class historians inSouth Asia who are teaching us to see Indian history in deep and profound ways not imaginedthree decades ago.The candidate will be presented by Susanne Hoeber Rudolph, the William Benton DistinguishedService Professor of Political Science."Gloria in excelsis, " from Mass in B Minor Johann Sebastian BachThe Rockefeller Memorial Chapel Choir and the Symphony of the ShoresConducted by Bruce TammenGlory be to God on high, and on earth peace to men of good will.THE ALMA MATERToday we gladly sing the praiseOf her whose daughters and whose sonsNow loyal voices proudly raiseTo bless her with our benisons.Of all fair mothers, fairest she,Most wise of all that wisest be,Most true of all the true, say we,Is our dear Alma Mater.-E.
