M. Plampin4THE CONFERRING OFTHE LLEWELLYN JOHN ANDHARRIET MANCHESTER QUANTRELL AWARDSFor Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching:FRED M. DONNERAssociate Proiessor, the Oriental Institute}Department if Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations} and the CollegeWhen Fred Donner walks into his first class on Islamic Civilization I, he goes inarmed with a large number of slides, and he tells his fifty-some students: I am going tointroduce you to the peoples and the lands where Islam flourished and still does. Heshows them slides of the deserts of Arabia, the green pastures of the Fertile Crescent, the carpet weavers of Central Asia, the mosques ofIstanbul, the veiled women ofIran, and the magnificent campus of the American University of Beirut. He then warnsthem: you may have heard one thing or another about Islam and Muslims; we are goingto forget all that and start afresh. We are going to study how Islamic civilization beganand developed, what its achievements have been, and how it contributed to worldcivilization; most importantly how Muslims have viewed the world and the centralquestions of human existence: life and death, love and hate, power and weakness, happiness and misery, and good and evil.A historian of early Islam, Fred Donner received his education mainly in the UnitedStates but also in the Near East. In the former, he learned the material and themethodology; in the latter, the language and the ethos. He chose for his dissertationtopic an area that is filled with complexity and uncertainty, namely the ''Arab Tribes inthe Muslim Conquest of Iraq" in the seventh century. This work not only laid thefoundation for modern critical studies on the Muslim conquests in general; it alsoopened the way for a new understanding of the importance of tribal and otherdemographic distribution factors in major historical changes throughout Islamichistory.Professor Donner later developed other related ideas in his further research. All ofthese he has been willing, indeed happy, to share with his graduate students; but henever forgets the undergraduates. On a theoretical level, he is one of the strongestadvocates of teaching in the College, of encouraging the development of a solidundergraduate program in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations, and of consolidating the various civilization sequence courses there. On apractical level, he took the lead in teaching the first quarter ofIslamic civilization. Withgreat enthusiasm, he introduces his young, aspiring students to a field almost alien tothem: times that are remote from them, and lands and peoples about which they knowvery little. Through his lectures and discussions, he not only gives them information, but also teaches them how to look at the past when encountering the achievements ofthe "other," and, ultimately, how to be humble when assessing the cumulativeachievement of humanity across the ages. The candidate will be presented by Wadad Kadi, Projessor and Chairman} Department if NearEastern Languages & Civilizations.CITATIONHistorian, researcher, committed humanist, and articulate citizen of the Universitywho has introduced his students to lands and peoples they have only remotely heard of,and taught them, by word and deed, how to appreciate other cultures in order tounderstand and enjoy our common human heritage.5HENRY J. FRISCHProfessor, Department of Physics}the Enrico Fermi Institute} and the CollegeHenry Frisch is an outstanding researcher with a distinguished career spanningmany experiments in the field of experimental particle physics. He is a leader and aninnovator in high energy physics research. This dedication and commitment to first-rate research are integral parts of hiseffectiveness as a teacher. He brings to the classroom not only his enthusiasm forphysics, but an attitude toward physics that only a first-rate researcher can teach. Heteaches not just the laws of physics, but how to attack a problem and how to think like aphysicist; and he brings into the classroom a sense of adventure and a sense of valuesand, not least, a sense of humor.Professor Frisch taught many of the physics majors being graduated today in theirfirst introductory course in honors physics at Chicago. This year he taught theundergraduate course in particle physics, while analyzing data from the premierparticle physics experiment in the U. S. These and others he has taught were superb, stimulating courses. But his effectiveness as a teacher goes far beyond the classroom.Undergraduate students have been involved in everyone of his research projects. Thesestudents work hard, and meet high standards; and they receive some of the bestguidance from one of the best teachers there is. Because of his commitment toundergraduates, these students not only learn, they make important contributions toresearch. That is perhaps the greatest gift a teacher can give to his students-a sense ofcompetence, of confidence, and of accomplishment.Professor Frisch is being honored today for his excellence in the teaching of Chicagoundergraduates. But you should know also that his dedication to education extendsbeyond the campus of the University of Chicago. He has devoted a great many longand often frustrating hours over the last several years toward the establishment of theTeachers' Academy for Science and Mathematics in Chicago, which is a school for the15,000 teachers of science and math at all levels of the Chicago public school system. This was an incredibly ambitious undertaking, but the Academy is now established andoperating. As described in the current issue of Physics Today, the Academy is intendedto serve as a model for large, urban school systems throughout the country; it isprobably the most important program now underway to raise the level of science andmath education in the United States.Henry Frisch's dedication to science education in the United States, to the higheststandards of research, to excellence in teaching, and above all to the teaching of researchto both undergraduates and graduates, are all different manifestations of a singlelifetime endeavor reflecting the deepest commitments to excellence, to research, and toeducation. The candidate will be presented by Frank S. Merritt} Professor, Department of Physics} the EnricoFermi Institute} and the College.CITATIONDistinguished physicist and gifted teacher, who helped shape the physical insights andthe scholarly thinking of many in his superb courses: he has had an immeasurableinfluence on the lives of students by teaching them how to do research, by workingclosely with them, and enabling them to be a part of attaining significant accomplishments in the study of physics.6CHARLES M. GRAYProfessor, Department of History and the College, ecturer in the Law School,Master of the New Collegiate Division, and Associate Dean of the CollegeCharles Gray's commitment to teaching in the College is unsurpassed. Every year heteaches a year-long section of Western Civilization, offers one or more seminars, andsupervises many independent study courses. But the real testament to his teaching isnot the number of courses offered, but the number of students who stumble into one ofhis classes and then become hooked on Professor Gray and his teaching, returning tohis classroom and to his office term after term. I have seen groups of students followtheir teacher back to his office after a class, unwilling to let him get away before theyhave had a chance to ask one more question, to offer one more theory, to suggest onemore interpretation of the text. They know that he will never dismiss their commentsas naive or uninformed, but that he will listen and consider their words with care andrespect. When students describe Charles Gray's teaching, they talk of his patience andencouragement, his faith in their ability, his kindness and concern, and his friendly, guiding hand. Perhaps most telling is the single sentence offered by one student: "Helistens. "Professor Gray and I have taught classes together, and I have seen how he guidesstudents through intricate and unfamiliar territory. He provides them with the toolsand with the confidence to tackle difficult material and to make it their own. Heformulates his questions in deceptively simple terms so as not to intimidate them. Heencourages them to voice their opinions, and lets them know that what they have to saymatters to him. Students have even been known to enjoy his final exams, carefully anddeliberately crafted to help the students integrate their own ideas and opinions with theformal course materials.Students are important to Charles Gray, and he is important to them. it is longoverdue that he be recognized for his commitment and contributions to the fundamental busienss of the College-to teaching and to students. By honoring him with aQuantrell Award, we honor the many students he has taught and advised. Their respectand love for him led to his nomination, and in conferring the award we confirm whatCharles Gray has always known: students' opinions are indeed valued here. The candidate will be presented by Martha Roth, Associate Professor, the Oriental Institute andDepartment of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations.CITATIONHistorian and scholar, who illuminates the legal, social, and intellectual legacies ofWestern Civilization as the means for training and honing the minds of his students. Tothis process he brings standards of scholarship, erudition and wide-ranging imagination, personal integrity, humor, and good sense. His patience, encouragement, andfaith in them enable his students to advance with a continually developing sense ofconfidence in their own abilities.7JOSEPH JARABAKAssociate Projessot; Department if MedicineTHOMAS M. JONESPrcfessot; Department if Medicine and the CollegeProfessor Jarabak and Professor Jones have brought to their course on endocrinologyfor college students the broad integrative thinking of clinical scientists. Their work asclinical endocrinologists requires an understanding of comparative endocrinology, ofthe molecular mechanisms of hormone action, and of the physiological influence ofhormones, and, of the importance of caring and compassion for their patients. Theirteaching gives students a deep appreciation for the regulation and integration ofbiological processes. Their occasional use of clinical examples only heightens students'appreciation of the relevance of these processes to their own lives, and their jointteaching is an illustration that science is a collaborative enterprise. When Franklin McLean organized the clinical facilities of the University in 1927, hemade clear that the clinical departments were to be new science departments in whatwas to become the Division of the Biological Sciences. It was McLean's conviction thatthere should be no administrative boundaries between the clinical and nonclinicaldepartments of the University. He was certain that free scholarly exchange betweenclinical faculty and their nonclinical colleagues would be mutually beneficial. Presentation of the Quantrell Award to these two clinical endocrinologists for their outstandingteaching of endocrine physiology in the College confirms the wisdom of McLean'svision.Dr. Jarabak and Dr. Jones have rewarded their undergraduate students through theirteaching over the years and along the way they have brought to them a vision stillsustained at our University. The candidates will be presented by Dr. Robert L. Perlman, Professor, Departments if Pediatricsand Pharmacological & Physiological Sciences and Committee on Neurobiology, and Director,Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., Mental Retardation Research Center.CITATIONClinical endocrinologists, you have brought to your students a deep appreciation of theregulation and integration of biological processes and their human implications in away that increases the understanding of scientists and non-scientists alike of theimportance of the collective intellectual enterprise.8RICHARD SALLERProfessorDepartments of History and Classical Languages & Literatures and the CollegeRichard Saller is a superb historian of Classical Rome whose writing combinesmastery of the classical texts with innovative reference to the lessons of anthropologyand ethnography. His work on the social bonds of family and patronage, of kinship andfriendship in Rome, has exercised a strong influence in his field. Indeed, a colleaguelooking for his writings in the Regenstein Library will find them all checked out, orelse-that dread phrase- "on trace." What swifter testimony can there be to thisinfluence in the University of Chicago? It is this scholarly excellence and its influence on undergraduates that we wish torecognize here today. Richard Saller is a true scholar. But, as one of his undergraduatesponsors says, "he does not try to present himself as an infallible guardian of theimpenetrable gates of academic paradise. He makes Knowledge accessible." RichardSaller, then, does not wield scholarship like the fiery sword placed at the gates of Eden, nor does he view undergradute papers as evidence of some educational original sin.Colleagues and students alike can vouch that there is about him an exceptional qualityof thoughtful openness, a patient willingness to understand the problem reflected byone's question. Above all, he communicates: his answers, like his lectures, are enrichednot merely by a store of information and lucid reasoning, but also by intellectualenthusiasm. It must be said that Richard Saller has learned at a good school. If his relationshipwith his students bears all the marks of amicitia, that benign bond of Roman socialharmony, his history teaching too is the product of a classical education. In Rome, thewriting of history belonged to the great traditions of rhetoric. The Romans held thatthe historian must make his audience attentive, tractable, and sympathetic. He mustgain their interest by showing that what he has to tell is either novel or of supremeimportance. Variety, pungency of expression, neat phraseology, dramatic narrativemust permeate his writing, along with a careful respect for truth. In all of this, RichardSaller excels. But he adds a special quality of his own: one of his undergraduates tells usthat "after a matter of seconds, his words become transparent to my ear-I forget I'mlistening to a lecture. " If professor Saller does not mind a reference here to a Greek poet,I may say that this is clearly modelled on a passage in Book 3 of The Iliad:But when he speaks, what elocution flows!Soft as descending snowsThe copious accents fall, with easy art;Melting they fall, and sink into the heart. The candidate will be presented by Colin Lucas, Professor, Department of Hisotry.CITATIONScholar of Classical Antiquity, historian of Society and family in Ancient Rome, whoseinnovative scholarship has inspired undergraduates to understand the relevance of thepast; his teaching and generous counsel have helped students to cross the thresholds oftheir endeavors and to realize fully their intellectual potential.9THE CONFERRING OF HONORARY DEGREESThe candidates will be announced by Edward 0. Laumann, Provost of the Universityand George Herbert Mead Professor, Department of SociologyFor the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters:DANIEL BELLHenry Ford II Professor of Social Sciences EmeritusHarvard UniversityFor more than four decades, Daniel Bell has been changing the way literate peoplesee the world. In writings marked by wit, verve, and deep erudition, he has delineatedour era in fresh ways, named its major phenomena, and helped equip our minds tounderstand them. In so doing he gave renewed legitimacy to the field of historicalsociology, stimulating rich debates about the central problems of modern society andsparking the resurgence of macrosocial, historical scholarship throughout the socialSCIences. In this country and abroad, Professor Bell figures as a rare prophet of our time. Hisideas about the status of ideology set the terms of much political and intellectual debateof the 1960's. His ideas from the early 1950's about the rehumanization of work are onlynow being taken seriously in this country. His pivotal formulations of the 1970's onpost-industrial society and on the cultural contradictions of capitalist societies havebecome a touchstone for recent observers. He has seen the future better than most othersocial scientists because he understands the implications of what he sees. His vision getsnourished by the freedom to range widely in the world of ideas, from economics andpolitics through art history, literature, and philosophy.A caring and responsive teacher, Daniel Bell brings to teaching the same singularity, passion, and integrity that he does to his scholarly work. He has been no lessdistinguished in his capacity to interpret the social world to a lay public, and to do sowith such elegance and responsibility that he elicits the highest regard from hisprofessional colleagues in the social sciences. His commitment to the teaching vocationmoved him to produce The Reforming of General Education in 1966, which offered aperspicacious analysis of general education experiments and an insightful probing ofissues that would not enter until a decade and a half later the fashionable discourseamong educators. The candidate will be presented by Ralph W Nicholas, Professor, Department of Anthropologyand the College, and Dean of the College.CITATIONTo an age beset by narrowness and fragmentation, he has brought broad and humanelearning. Speaking with equal credibility to audiences of professionals, students, andlay publics, he has offered fresh and penetrating interpretations of the late modernepoch. To a distinguished scholarly career, he has joined a zeal for teaching and aprophetic concern for the fate of liberal education. His courage and breadth haveinspired generations of students not to flinch from confronting the most difficultproblems about our changing society and about how best to organize our lives in thisera of "the information economy. "10QUENTIN SKINNERProfessor of Political ScienceUniversity of CambridgeQuentin Skinner established his reputation, which is now world-wide, with twoseries of articles. The first concerned the theory of interpretation, in which he arguedfor a contextualist and intentionalist approach to "meaning," and the second supportedthe theory with various studies of Thomas Hobbes. Both proved to be significant notonly for the reading of texts in political science, but in history and literature.Professor Skinner then worked for a number of years on his two-volume Foundationsof Modern Political Thought (1978), which is unquestionably the single most influentialwork on the subject in our generation. A monograph on Lorenzetti has extended hisrange into art history and deepened his reassessment of the origins of the Renaissance, and our modern conceptions of the state.Professor Skinner brings to these works, and to other essays and studies toonumerous to mention, an extraordinary intellectual penetration and superb clarity ofthought. His writing, even on the most difficult topics, is famous for its lucidity, andhis lectures are now celebrated from Cambridge to Melbourne. His devotion toteaching in all its modes is matched by his generosity to younger scholars, and theaffection which he inspires in his students. He has helped to shape in important ways anentire field of intellectual endeavor and has built his department at Cambridge into theworld's leading institution for the study of the history of political thought. The candidate will be presented by John Wallace, Professor, Department of English Language &Literature and the College.CITATIONWho has been a leader in transforming the study of his field, and the revolutionaryimpact of his work has influenced other disciplines. By combining a contextualisttheory of interpretation with scholarship of the finest order, he has rewritten the historyof political thought in the Renaissance and Reformation in books already acknowledged as classics; and his brilliant lectures and seminars around the world have bornewitness to his vocation as a teacher. Readers and students alike pay tribute to hisgenerosity of spirit and the exceptional clarity of his thought and writing.11For the Degree of Doctor of Science:LUBERT STRYER, S.B., 1957Winzer Professor of Cell Biology"" Stanford UniversityLubert Stryer began his higher education at the University of Chicago; receiving hisbaccalaureate degree in 1957. The sense of questioning that pervaded the classrooms ofthe college carried over into his further education such that even as a medical student,Stryer began the research for which he has achieved international fame: studies of theinteractions .of light with proteins. His first major contribution was discerning the molecular structure of proteins usinglight energy transfer as a spectroscopic ruler. The efficiency of energy transfer is alsouseful in the analysis of collisional interactions between closely packed molecules, suchas those occurring in the motion oflipids in membranes. It was Lubert Stryer whointroduced this approach to the analysis of molecular motion in biological membranes.Another goal has been to improve the technical base of fluorescence measurement, developing more powerful instrumentation and novel fluorescent probes. He hasapplied these techniques to important problems in cell biology yielding results ofunprecedented sensitivity and precision.Over the last decade, Professor Stryer has exerted profound leadership in theelucidation of the cascade of molecular events in the retina of the eye which follows theinitial absorption oflight by the protein, rhodopsin - a visual pigment. The phenomena elucidated by him explains the ability of a photoreceptor cell, known as a rod, toabsorb a single photon oflight and subsequently generate a large cellular response. Thisamplifying cascade accounts for the amazing sensitivity of photoreceptor cells. This, and more recent work on the role of calcium ions in photoreceptors, has beencharacterized as "pioneering, seminal, and elegant. "Professor Stryer's passion for the communication of knowledge, as well as for itsdiscovery, is exemplified in his textbook, Biochemistry. Now in its third edition andtranslated into many languages, it has contributed to the education of countlessstudents all over the world. This volume, a model of clarity and content, underscoresthe author's mastery of the discipline, his dedication to the highest standards ofexcellence, and his pedagogical skills. It demonstrates that, in addition to his enormousresearch accomplishments, Professor Stryer is one of the preeminent educators of hisgeneration. The University of Chicago is honored to recognize the achievements of oneof its College's most distinguished alumni. The candidate will be presented by Philip C. Hoffmann, Professor, Department ofPharmacological & Physiological Sciences and the College.CITATIONWhose research on the interactions oflight with proteins has yielded profound insightsconcerning protein structure and function. This work has allowed him to elucidate themanner in which light signals are amplified and transformed into chemical signals inthe photoreceptor cells of the retina of the eye. In addition, he has written a leadingtextbook, Biochemistry, noted for its clarity and content. Through this book alone hehas contributed to the education of countless students all over the world and shownhimself to be among the pre-eminent educators of his generation.
