He has designed an experimental program that challenges the best efforts of students, and provides special offerings for the more aspiring among them. His own distinguished researchon the chemical composition of the universe and the fractionation processes that have occurredin its evolution, has required qualities of rigor, skill, insight, and analysis which his students haverecognized and have set as standards for themselves. The candidate will be presented by Peter J. Wyllie, Master, Physical Sciences CollegiateDivision, and Associate Dean, College.JOHN LEE HUBBY, Professor, Department of Biology, Committee on Genetics,Committee on Evolutionary Biology, and CollegeThere is an excellence in teaching that springs from those whose teaching is continually transformed by their own unresting attempts at discovery. It is displayed by John L. Hubby whose research and scholarship have led to major restructuring of evolutionary and developmental genetics, including its teaching. This much-prized quality is clearly evident in the creativity and early independence of his graduate students. It especially shapes his undergraduate offering of CommonCore and Advanced Biology, generating succinct, topical, and stimulating lectures, thoughtful andrigorous seminars, exciting and productive supervision of undergraduate research. It infects his colleagues with wise counsel in the ways of teaching. It countenances no standards but the highest. To such a research-teaching continuum is added major and continuing contributions to the University Community, both generally and through the College. These characteristics truly define unity of scholarship and deny the falsely-conceived division thatsets research against teaching. "All parts of the University are teaching agencies, and in all partsteachers are engaged in the pursuit of new knowledge." John L. Hubby exemplifies all that is bestin these ideals.,The candidate will be presented by Charles E. Oxnard, Master, Biological Sciences Collegiate Division, and Associate Dean, College.NORMAN FITZROY MACLEAN, William Rainey Harper Professor, College, and Professor, Department of English Language and LiteratureNorman Maclean received a prize for excellence in undergraduate teaching in 1932, his first yearas a member of the faculty, and again in 1941. In 1963, he became the William Rainey HarperProfessor of English in recognition of his distinguished service to the College, and especially of histeaching. In 1972, one of many students who have continued to nominate him for a Quantrellaward, perhaps unaware that he had had two teaching prizes before the present generation wasborn, asked a rhetorical question: "Does it seem superfluous to give a prize for teaching to a manwhose extensive reputation is the result of his teaching?" "I think not," she continued, "for greatmen deserve constant recognition-in appreciation of their greatness and as confirmation thattheir reputations are not merely that." Now, in 1973, the year he becomes a Professor Emeritusand the seventy-first year of his life, we affectionately join in confirming that he is indeed still ashe was at the beginning, forty-one years ago.It seems best to describe him in words borrowed from his recent students, altered only in arrangement and punctuation. "It is hard to say exactly what one thing makes Mr. Maclean such anexceptional teacher. He is a man of incredible acuity and sensitivity, and he is a man who lovesliterature; but these are not uncommon things in this university. More importantly, one alwaysfeels how much he cares that his students should understand what constitutes the greatness of aShakespeare or a Keats (or a Willie Mays). You want to repay his devotion and justify the energyhe puts into his work by showing that he has taught you well. Thus the only way you can repayhim is also the way you yourself become better, with a clearer sense of your own abilities. To bein his class is to experience a great mind and a great man. It is to learn about literature, and evenmore, to learn about yourself. From the guidance of his wisdom and the struggle of your own mindto reach its utmost comes the special tension and excitement that characterize his classes."The candidate will be presented by Warner A.
