ABELLA, Assistant Professor of PhysicsA rising young scientist whose brief four years at the University afford a model of the fruitfulunion of fundamental scientific research with dedicated teaching, Isaac Abella's contributions haveestablished him as a professor of unusual versatility and impressive stature. His researches in thefield of modern optics, and especially on the physical applications of lasers, have brought him international recognition. Through his profound knowledge he has contributed vitally to the University'svarious activities in this field. He has also given generously of his time to national and state committees dealing with problems of lasers, and has been called upon to serve as a visiting lecturer atmany small colleges and universities in a nation-wide program to foster interest in physics. As ateacher, Mrr Abella has conducted classes ranging from the first year of physics through advancedundergraduate to graduate lecture and laboratory courses. His brilliant lectures, and his remarkableskill in designing and performing lecture demonstrations, have engaged the minds of his students, and have had a lasting influence upon them. His infectious delight in explaining the beauties ofscientific thought invest his lectures with the utmost fascination.Mr. Abella has also been devoted to students outside the classroom. He has served for severalyears as faculty adviser to the University's student radio station. As personal faculty counsellor andfriend to a great many students, he is known widely and affectionately for his accessibility and hisserious and sympathetic attention to student problems.VIRGIL BURNETT, Associate Professor of ArtVirgil Burnett is a special kind of teacher, not only a professional artist who teaches by his ownexample but the rare artist who is capable of putting concepts into words and of working intellectuaIIy with the students in his studio. His lively and versatile mind has made him an active forcein many kinds of teaching, in general education and in advanced courses, in the classroom and outof the classroom; in courses in the practice of art and in the history and analysis of art; in the conduct of the Bergman Gallery as a center for varied and imaginative exhibitions of art; in the production of drama, where his talents for design and his knowledge of literature have combined withoriginal and beautiful results. At every point he has touched he has lifted the level of humane lifein the College. To his students he extends the opportunity of learning by creating; they respond tohis style; they find him a man who gives them freedom, whose manner is relaxed, witty and alwaysfriendly:, and who stimulates and controls the quality of their work by the command of his owndedication and excellence.EMILE KARAFIOL, Assistant Professor of HistoryEmile Karafiol joined the Chicago faculty in 1960, as a teacher and as a historian of CentralEurope in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He is known to his colleagues as unusuallywell-read and erudite; always stimulating and provocative in discussions; probing and critical in development of argument. Mr. Karafiol's ability as a teacher has been demonstrated in the History ofWestern Civilization course and in the many courses of European History covering the fields ofintellectual history and history of political thought, administrative and political history. In addition to his scholarly research and teaching, Mr. Karafiol has devoted much time, interestand energy to guiding history students in his capacity as Associate Chairman of the College HistoryProgram. His willingness to help students outside the classroom is matched by his effectiveness inboth lectures and discussions in his courses. The expansion and improvement of our College HistoryProgram owes a great deal to his contribution as a dedicated scholar and teacher.HENRY RAGO, Professor of Theology and LiteratureHenry Rago was concerned for the human use of the imagination. The artist, he taught, respondsto two commandments: tell the truth and make it new. Mr. Rago had the gift of enriching oursensibility by drawing us down a shifting maze of paths to the human center of the artist's activity.Mr. Rago's teaching mode was dialectical. He would begin rather casually, remarking on certaintechnical matters in a poem-the shortness of one line, the way a half-rhyme is used to throw asentiment away. Then he would begin to elaborate the meaning of these devices; he would talk, for example, about certain poets as seeking the authentic in the understated, the personal. Graduallyhe would establish a term like "personal," drawing it from a welter of particulars until it was solidlyenough founded to serve as a base for other terms. Gradually a complex argument would unwind, each link joined to its neighbor by the concrete instances he cited as he went. Paragraph joined toparagraph, class to class, course to course. To hear the full quality of Henry Rage's mind one hadto work with him over a period of time. His teaching had the quality of the Italian architecture heloved: it was both ordered and elaborate.Henry Rago was a person in whose presence other people's minds worked better. People whotalked to him found themselves rising to his level of complexity and elegance. Wherever he was hewas teaching. At a party, a committee meeting, just standing in line somewhere, his conversationwas always subtle and vigorous, moving from formulation to example to anecdote to new formulations. So his classroom teaching and his tutorial teaching were at once personal and formal; hewas a formal person. Wherever he moved he diffused his own style and his own love of excellence.MANFRED RUDDAT, Assistant Professor of BiologyIn the aftermath of World War II, when his German compatriots were trying to put togetherthe pieces of a nation shattered by Nazi fanaticism and the ravages of war, Manfred Ruddat wasputting together an education that was to become the foundation of a constructive career as teacherand scientist. His interest in biology deepened during his undergraduate days at the Universities ofFreiburg and Bonn. While still an undergraduate, he received a fellowship that permitted him tospend a year at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. As a doctoral candidate at the University of Tubingen, under the tutelage of Professor Ernst Bunning, Manfred Ruddat turned hisattention to one of the most intriguing questions of modern biology: What accounts for rhythmicityof certain biological problems? Specifically, he examined the nature of the "biological clock" governing zoospore discharge in green algae. This work led him to be recommended as a post-doctoralinvestigator in the laboratory of Anton Lang at the California Institute of Technology. In Lang'slaboratory, from 1961 to 1964, Mr. Ruddat's researches turned naturally to another challengingaspect of the regulation of biological processes: How do hormones regulate growth and floweringin plants? He has continued to pursue this problem since 1964 at the University as a member ofthe then Department of Botany and of the faculty of the Collegiate Division of Biology.Mr. Ruddat's teaching is enlivened by the same enthusiasm he has for the study of complex biological phenomena. Whether teaching the general education course in biology or more advancedcourses dealing with growth and development or with plant hormones, Mr. Ruddat is skilled atdrawing upon the intellectual potential of his students and leading them to a discriminating appreciation of the known and unknown in living nature. Mr. Ruddat's success is based, in part, uponhis interest in students, his recognition of their individual characteristics and of the educationalchallenge posed by their differences. It is based, too, upon a striving for clarity of thought and exposition, the happy outcome of which is attested by the many expressions of thanks his students havegiven in recommending him for this award.THE CONFERRING OF ACADEMIC DEGREESCandidates for degrees will be presented in the following order:In the Division of the Biological Sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicineby Dean Leon O.
