Alleluia.THE LLEWELLYN JOHN ANDHARRIET MANCHESTER QUANTRELLAWARDSFor Excellence in Undergraduate TeachingMICHAEL JOSEPH MURRIN, Assistant Professor oi English and of the HumanitiesMichael Murrin joined the faculty at Chicago in 1963, coming here from his graduate studies atYale. He is a scholar and critic of the poetry of the English Renaissance who has begun to publishreviews and articles in the learned journals; aided by the award of a Willett Fellowship he is currently completing a book on Allegory and Rhetoric in the English Renaissance. His courses in thepoetry of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are marked by his learning, by careful planning, and by an enthusiastic presentation and commitment to the subject which have evoked from hisstudents a responsive intellectual excitement. The major part of his teaching has been in the generaleducation courses in English and the Humanities; in them he has also served most ably as an examiner, as one of the designers of the curriculum, and as chairman of a basic course. By the testimonyof his students his excellence in the classroom lies in the manner in which he teaches not only thetexts of individual works but, through them, a general sensitivity to words and their organization. Each class, by a skilled questioning and a discussion that involves his students in the immediate experience of learning, is a developed movement to an insight into the art of literature. He has, moreover, a personal warmth and an interest in students which extends beyond the classroom and whichhas made for him many admiring friends.PAUL JOSEPH SALLY, JR., Instructor in MathematicsPaul Sally, a native Bostonian, received his Ph.D. degree from Brandeis in 1965 and joined theChicago faculty that same year. In the two years since then, his classes in calculus and advancedcalculus have had an unusual impact on students. His informal but infectiously enthusiastic classroom manner has shown his students the delights of a subject sometimes thought to be austere.Always rigorous but never pompous, he leads his classes through difficult problems by clear, carefulsteps. Actively engaged in research, he teaches his students by example that mathematics is a creative process., not just a body of abstract rules. At the same time he has a deep concern for the individual student's progress; his office door is always open.DAVID BURTON WAKE, Assistant Professor oi Biology and of AnatomyDavid Wake came to Chicago from the University of Southern California in 1964. In his chosenresearch area, evolutionary biology, the quality and amount of his work have already earned himnational recognition. At the same time, he has made his presence felt in the classroom by carrying afull teaching load, to the benefit of many of our students. His classes have an atmosphere of intellectual excitement without being theatrical. His willingness to give of himself to students outsideclass is also well known. He is an outstanding example of the fruitful union of scholarship andteaching.GILBERT F. WHITE, Professor of GeographyGilbert White, who received the S.B., S.M., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago, has been a consultant to a number of federal agencies, Executive Director of the American FriendsService Committee, and the U.S. member of the UNESCO Committee on Arid Zone Research. From 1946 to 1955 he was President of Haverford College, retiring to join the Chicago faculty asProfessor of Geography in 1956. His well-known dedication to excellence in undergraduate education is matched by his effectiveness as a teacher. In a characteristic low-keyed but firm style, hemoves students into inquiry through a pedagogy distinguished by unembarrassed respect for studentsas human beings and periodic reflection on the educational process itself. His generous and thoughtful concern for students outside the classroom has helped shape many young academic careers andcontributed to a lively sense of the university as an intellectual community. As the first chairman ofthe new concentration program in Public Affairs, he has built that program with such imaginationand vitality that it has already become a source of continuing creativity in the College.THE AWARDS OF HONORSAwarded General Honors with the Bachelor's Degree:David N.
