He haspublished a book on the Tuscan Academies in the age of Enlightenment and is at work on ahistory of Florence from the mid-sixteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth century. Both represent major and original contributions in the field of Italian history and reflect his concern with relating many different aspects of history-cultural, political, and social-to one another. He has published many articles on such diverse figures as Machiavelli, Galileo, and Muratori. Asa teacher, Mr. Cochrane has effectively translated scholarly rigor, commitment to clarity ofthought and of expression, and a passion for interpreting the nature of historical method andexperience into the terms that make his students not simply learners, but participants. At everylevel, in his sections in the History of Western Civilization, his course on the later Middle Ages, his courses on the Renaissance, the Counter-Reformation, and the history of Italy, undergraduates are stimulated to such participation and to lively discussion. Mr. Cochrane gives generouslyof his time to students outside the classroom as well, and he has been especially active in shaping the present history concentration and in counseling the students who have entered it. A proponent of action as well as thought, he exemplifies for his students and colleagues the life ofthe responsible intellectual, the ideal of the teacher-scholar, and the possibilities of being at oncea distinguished specialist and an outstanding generalist.JAMES M. REDFIELD, Assistant Professor in the Committee on Social ThoughtJames Redfield was educated at the University of Chicago and New College, Oxford; he receivedhis Ph.D. degree from the Committee on Social Thought in 1961. He has held various fellowships, including a Woodrow Wilson for work at Oxford and an Earhart Foundation Fellowshipat the University of Chicago.Mr. Redfield is well known both for his wide-ranging interests in fifth-century Greek history, philosophy and political science, and for his intensive studies on various aspects of Greek cultureand language. He has translated Aristophanes' The Clouds and The Frogs and has published various articles, including "Aristophanes and Politics" in the German journal Antaeus, and "ALecture on Plato's Apology" in the Journal of General Education. He is currently working ontwo projects-a source book on inscriptions in the classical period and a synthetic history on thedevelopment of various elements in Athenian public and private life.Mr. Redfield embodies the scholar committed to imparting to others what he knows. (Hisstanding invitation to teach anyone Greek who wants to learn it is a symbol of that attitude.) Inaddition to teaching first-year Greek, he has taught courses in the Platonic dialogues and inAthenian politics, the third-year Humanities course in criticism, and a new three-quarter coursein Greek civilization which is radical in design. He has also lectured frequently in all three ofthe Humanities courses and in the History of Western Civilization course.Anyone who has studied with Mr. Redfield is aware of his devotion to his task as teacher, hisinsistence on a rigorous examination of the subject matter at hand, his demand that the studentlive up to his own perfectionist standards. By precept and example he has demonstrated what itmeans to be scholar and teacher in the truest and best sense.JOSEPH JACKSON SCHWAB, William Rainey Harper Professor of the NaturalSciences in the College and Professor in the Department of EducationMr. Schwab is an outstanding example of a Chicago trained educator. He received his Ph.B.degree in English Literature here in 1930 and then continued on to the Ph.D. degree in Zoology, working under one of the world's distinguished geneticists, Sewall Wright. He was appointedInstructor in Biology in the College in 1937 and proceeded to develop his own inimitable techniques of small-group instruction. As he proceeded upward through the academic ranks, his interests gravitated toward the Philosophy of Biology and the processes of education. In 1950 he wasnamed the William Rainey Harper Professor of the Natural Sciences, and he holds equivalent rankin the Graduate School and Department of Education. His investigations into the educationalprocess have been coupled with a great ability to communicate with students. His classes are invariably oversubscribed and unforgettable to those who are fortunate enough to be in them. As aresult of his activities in the area of materials, methods, and classroom technique, he has held visiting professorships at Columbia University and in Puerto Rico. He has been consultant on curriculum for a number of years to Puerto Rico and has most recently served as United States representative on the UNESCO panel on undergraduate Biology. He was also a prime mover in thedevelopment of the Biological Sciences curriculum study materials that are among the finesthigh-school programs available today. His most recent and outstanding contribution to thisprogram has been the Biology Teachers Handbook incorporating many of the innovations whichhe has brought to the field of Biology teaching.NIEN-CHU YANG, Professor in the Department of ChemistryFor his dedicated and inspiring teaching of Organic Chemistry to undergraduate students, andfor his tireless efforts to stimulate their independent study. Through his leadership, as Directorof Undergraduate Honors Research in Chemistry, increasing numbers of students now have anopportunity to make original contributions to scientific knowledge. Keen judge of potential ability, wise counselor, and persuasive innovator, he has given renewed vigor and meaning to undergraduate studies in Chemistry.THE AWARD OF HONORSAwarded General Honors with the Bachelor's Degree:Jack Abraham AlhadeffKatherine BaileyJordy BellMark Raphael BirnbaumCharles William BoggsLinda Lee BowdoinJack Steven CatlinHoward P.
