HandelTHE LLEWELLYN JOHN ANDHARRIET MANCHESTER QUANTRELLAWARDSFor Excellence in Undergraduate TeachingSYLVAIN BROMBERGER, Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy andof the Physical Sciences in the CollegeMr. Bromberger came to the United States from his native Belgium in 1940. He received hisA.B. degree from Columbia in 1948. After a year of graduate work in physics and philosophy atColumbia, he went to Harvard where he received his Ph.D. degree in Philosophy. He taught philosophy at Princeton for six years, then came to the University of Chicago in 1961.In addition to his teaching of the undergraduate physical sciences course, Mr. Bromberger hastaught a wide variety of courses in logic and philosophy of science, including seminars on the concept of explanation, on philosophy of language, and on philosophy of history. Mr. Bromberger'sstudents have profited immensely from his dual role as a teacher of science and philosophy. Thestudents in his undergraduate physical sciences course gratefully appreciate his ability to penetrateto the heart of their difficulties in understanding science; whereas the students in his philosophycourses recognize in Mr. Bromberger the uniquely valuable combination of a first-rate philosophicmind in close touch with real scientific problems. Mr. Bromberger's colleagues have found theycan depend upon him for acute, informed, and constructive criticisms of their work. Mr. Bromberger's own research has centered on the concept of explanation and the nature of scientific theory. Beginning with a profound critique of earlier attempts to deal with these problems, he hasbegun to develop an approach which more nearly fits the actual ongoing character of scientific inquiries. In his writing, in his contacts with students both in and out of class, and in conversationwith his colleagues, Mr. Bromberger constantly exhibits the virtues of a fine teacher: receptivity tothe ideas of others accompanied by a scrupulous regard for the highest intellectual standards.JOHN G. CAWELTI, Assistant Professor of English and of the Humanities in theCollegeJohn Cawelti holds the A.B. degree in Classics from Oberlin and the A.M. and Ph.D. degrees inAmerican Civilization and English from the State University of Iowa. From 1952 to 1954 heserved as a Lieutenant in the Army, and after his graduate work at Iowa, he came to the University in 1957.Mr. Cawelti is known to both his students and his colleagues as an outstanding teacher and scholar. He has written on a wide variety of subjects in American literature and American cultural history, and his publications range from the two-volume Sources oi the American Republic, done in collaboration with Alexander Kern and Marvin Meyers, to articles on Melville's Confidence Man andthe American Western. He has just completed a book, Mobility and Democracy: Studies in theExpression at the American Dream, and is now working on a number of projects, which include anarticle on Henry James and an exploration of criteria for evidence in cultural studies.Mr. Cawelti has taught in both the first- and second-year humanities courses and for three yearshas served as Chairman of the first-year course. He has also devised courses, in the Committee onGeneral Studies in the Humanities and in the Committee on the History of Culture, that areunique, and he has taught regular English courses as well. His devotion to his task as teacher, hisinsistence on a rigorous examination of the subject matter at hand and on the proper formulationof the problems within a discipline, together with his lively sense of what the discussion methodinvolves, have made his classes outstanding. His energy and his ability to bring the student to anunderstanding of the text in hand or to an understanding of interdisciplinary problems are wellknown. By precept and example he has communicated to students and colleagues, and to membersof the community in which he lives, what it means to be a humanist.FRANK M. CHILD, Assistant Professor in the Department of ZoologyMr. Child has been a member of the College Biology Section since it was first organized in 1959.He served with distinction on the first curriculum committee of the Section, which was responsible for the elaboration of the guidelines since used by the Section in its general education program.Mr. Child contributed to the implementation of these guidelines as well.Mr. Child is responsible for the Biology 202 course, a part of the core curriculum required ofall biology majors. This program has recently been revised and the sequence of courses changed inorder to take account of the explosion of knowledge in the biological sciences that has occurredwithin the past decade. Mr. Child has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to move with thetimes and to relate current findings to important principles and concepts that form the continuityof science. This year he assumed responsibility for organizing and leading a seminar for undergraduate students doing special projects in biology with a view toward earning special honors at graduation. In addition, he is an Adviser in the College.Mr. Child is known on the national scene both for his research in cell physiology, in which hehas attracted graduate and postdoctoral students, and for his work in science education. In the lattercapacity, he has been named to the national Commission on Undergraduate Education in the Biological Sciences that is engaged in evaluating the impact of recent scientific achievements on undergraduate education in biology and in recommending policy for curricular improvements. Mr. Childcombines in his work and teaching the knowledge of the professional biologist who is contributingto research, the dedication of the teacher who is the interpreter of the science, and the responsibility of the citizen who takes time from his private duties to serve the larger community in thenational arena.RALPH M. LERNER, Assistant Professor of the Social Sciences in the CollegeRalph Lerner was educated in the College of the University of Chicago, from which he took hisA.B. degree in 1947. The Department of Political Science awarded him the A.M. degree withhonors in 1949 and the Ph.D. degree in 1953. After military service as a teacher in Germany, further study at Cambridge University, and experience as an adult educationist, Mr. Lerner joinedthe faculty of the College as Instructor in 1957. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1958and has since taken a leading role in the first-year course of general education in the social sciences. At intervals he has taught also in the Departments of Political Science at Chicago and at StanfordUniversity.Deeply schooled in the classics of political thought in the West, Mr. Lerner is an expert scholarin the political philosophy of medieval Judaism. He has made original contributions to the comparison of the medieval political philosophies of the Judaic, Christian, and Islamic traditions. Atthe same time, his close analyses of American political thought have contributed continuously tothe revision and improvement of the Social Sciences 111-113 course. Both to his students and tohis colleagues, Mr. Lerner has exemplified a mastery of and an enthusiasm for Socratic methods ofdiscussion. To all, he has upheld the highest standards of performance in intellectual discoursefullness of information, precision of conception, clarity and grace of expression, and open-mindedness to opposing views. His teaching has conveyed a rare sense of the meaning and value of scholarly inquiry.THE AWARD OF HONORSAwarded General Honors with the Bachelor's Degree:Jon G.
