BEADLEPresident of the UniversitySOLOAlleluia VivaldiTERESA ORANTES, Soprano, Rockefeller Chapel ChoirTHE LLEWELLYN JOHN ANDHARRIET MANCHESTER QUANTRELLAWARDSFor Excellence in Undergraduate TeachingRICHARD KENNETH LASHOF, Associate Professor of Mathematics in the Collegeand the Department of MathematicsMr. Lashof came to the University as an instructor in 1954, just after receiving his Ph.D. degreefrom Columbia University. In 1959 he was appointed to his present rank of Associate Professorin the College and the Department of Mathematics. From the beginning of his career here, Mr. Lashof has been notably productive in the University's work in mathematics at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels. While on theone hand he has conducted and directed mathematical research (his contributions to differentialgeometry and differential topology are of particular distinction), on the other he has advisedmathematics Seniors regularly and accomplished the considerable feat of teaching the full rangeof undergraduate mathematics courses. Recently, and with conspicuous imagination and energy,he has established a new course sequence in modern geometry for both advanced undergraduateand graduate students.Through his clear, forceful teaching, his friendly and cogent counsel, his personal charm, hisknowledge and his devotion to mathematics, Mr. Lashof draws students from all levels toward aclearer view of the unity of mathematics and a more inventive relation to mathematics. Becauseof him students and staff alike have a sharper sense of the mutual excitement and satisfaction inthe common enterprise of learning mathematics, and through this a larger appreciation of thevalues of the University.McKIM MARRIOTT, Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and inthe Social Sciences Section of the CollegeAfter two years at Harvard College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and wartimeservice in the Army, Mr. Marriott entered the University of Chicago where he specialized in socialanthropology and the civilization of India. He has carried out field research in both Indian villagesand towns, as well as archival investigations, and through his publications on Village India andthe caste system" has reached a position of leadership in his chosen field. He taught for a brief period at the University of California, after which he returned to theUniversity where he has helped develop the program in Indian Civilizations and has been bothteacher and administrator in the Social Sciences general courses. His greatest contribution, perhaps, has been the skill with which he brings together theoretical conceptions from the social sciencesand an understanding of the great humanistic tradition of India in a way that is illuminating bothto his colleagues and to the students of the College and University.GERSON M. ROSENTHAL, JR., Assistant Professor of Biology in the CollegeMr. Rosenthal received the j--;B. degree from Dartmouth College in 1943. During the followingthree years he served as a meteorologist and operations officer in the U.S. Army Air Force, wherehe held the rank of lieutenant. Immediately after the war, Mr. Rosenthal did graduate work atthe University of Chicago. He subsequently transferred to the University of California at Berkeley, where he received the A.M. (1951) and Ph.D. (1954) degrees in zoology. He returned toChicago in 1954 as a teaching intern in the College Natural Sciences program under a grant fromthe Ford Foundation. In the following year he became a regular member of the College faculty.Mr. Rosenthal soon became known to students and colleagues alike as a superior teacher. He hasalso had a major role in recent curriculum revisions, and as the current chairman of the Biology III course, he continues to display conspicuous leadership. Mr. Rosenthal is interested inthe flow of materials and energy in biological communities, and studies these by means of radioactive tracers. In addition to his scientific publications, he is working on a textbook of generalbiology based on his experience in the College program.HERMAN LOUIS SINAIKO, Assistant Professor of Humanities in the College and inthe Department of Oriental Languages and CivilizationsHerman Sinaiko holds the A.B. degree from the College and the Ph.D. degree from the Committee on Social Thought in the University of Chicago. His association with the College facultybegan in 1954 with an appointment as graduate assistant in Humanities; he has been a regularmember of the faculty of the College and the Division of Humanities since 1956.Mr. Sinaiko's learning is remarkable for its depth and its diversity. He is centrally concernedwith comparing and contrasting the philosophical traditions of China and the Western world. He has acquired a professional mastery of the Chinese language and Classical Chinese philosophy. His knowledge of Greek philosophy-in particular, the dialogues of Plato-is profound. He hasshed important light on philosophic texts, yet, at the same time, has been interested in manycritical problems as they appear in the literature of various peoples and periods. It is significantthat one of his published articles deals with the educational usefulness of Anna Karenina.Mr. Sinaiko's wisdom and imagination are unstintingly employed in the conduct of his classes. He is an energetic, high-spirited" and devoted teacher. He has generously assumed positions ofresponsibility in administration, including the chairmanship of the third-year course in Humanities. His qualities of humane, unselfish leadership are admired by his students and colleagues as wellas by the community of which the University is a part. By precept and example, he communicates the values to which the Humanities are ultimately addressed.THE AWARD OF HONORSAwarded General Honors with the Bachelor's Degree:Margaret Elizabeth AndersonMurray David BattRichard Charles Edward BeckClare Lawton BeghtolAlan J.
