HandelTHE LLEWELLYN JOHN AND HARRIETMANCHESTER QUANTRELL AWARDSFor Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Are Made toNORMAN H. NACHTRIEB, Professor in the Department of Chemistry and the Institute for the Study of Metals, Chairman of the Department of Chemistry, andHead of the Physical Sciences Section in the CollegeMr. Nachtrieb is a faithful son of this University. He took his S.B. degree here in 1936and his Ph.D. degree in 1941; returned as a research chemist in the wartime Metallurgical Laboratory; and then joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry. He represents the all too rarebreed of men in modern science who deftly combine the power of intellect required to make significant contributions at the growing edge of knowledge with the understanding and perspectiveneeded to impart the excitement and substance of learning to others. His are the talents of boththe researcher and the teacher, and in both capacities he has been invaluable to the University ofChicago. This is most evident in his present assignment. Mr. Nachtrieb serves as an effectivebridge between the graduate research programs in the Division of the Physical Sciences, where hecarries on a broad spectrum of chemical investigations particularly into the mechanisms of thetransport processes of solids and liquids, and the College's undergraduate instruction in the physical sciences; for which he bears responsibility as Head of Section and in which he teaches chemistry to Freshmen with great distinction. This dual role, bringing together the search for newknowledge with the teaching of the fundamentals on which it is based, has never been moreimportant than it is now. One of the tragedies of this age of science is the great illiteracy of educated men and women about the natural sciences. Contributions of the quality of his own canhelp to break this barrier.LEO NEDELSKY, Professor of Physical Sciences in the CollegeMr. Nedelsky earned the S.B. degree in physics at the University of Washington and the S.M.and Ph.D. degrees in theoretical physics at the University of California. He was an instructor inphysics at that university from 1932 to 1935, and became a member of the faculty of HunterCollege in the latter year. He joined the faculty of the College and the Board of Examiners ofthe University of Chicago in 1941 and has been a Professor of Physical Sciences since 1959.An inspiring and dedicated teacher, Professor Nedelsky is remembered by his many studentswith much affection. Under his guidance the acquired an insight into the methods of scientific,\inquiry through careful observation and thoughtful analysis. A champion of the belief that thegreat ideas of physics are a part of the cultural heritage of all young men and women, he hasdevoted the major part of his professional life to the realization of that ideal. Nationally prominent among college physics teachers, he has devoted much time and effort to the development ofinstructional methods and to the preparation of examination models. He has lectured widely toinstructors in institutions of higher learning in the United States on these subjects, and has beenan active member of the American Association of Physics Teachers.FRED A. SIEGLER, Assistant Professor of Philosophy in the CollegeMr. Siegler received his B.A. degree from Oxford University in 1955, and his Ph.D. degreefrom Stanford University in 1960. He joined the College faculty in 1959. From the outset he hasshown his determination to combine the excellence of a teacher, in a wide range of humanisticinterests, with the professional ambition of a philosopher. His generous bestowal of time, tact, and insight on the personal needs of students, whether engaged in classroom studies or independent projects, has won everyone's admiration. Among his conspicuous successes has been the organization of a seminar for undergraduate majors in philosophy-a development that is enriching, inupper-class work, the College's reputation for excellence in teaching.EDWARD WASIOLEK, Associate Professor of English in the College and AssociateProfessor in the Department of Slavic Languages and LiteraturesMr. Wasiolek received his A.B. degree in English at Rutgers University in 1949; his Ph.D.degree in Comparative Literature (English, French, and Russian) at Harvard University in 1955.After teaching experience at Harvard and Ohio Wesleyan University, he joined the faculty of theCollege in 1955. He has served as chairman of the general-education course in English Composition and is currently holding a joint appointment in English and in the Department of SlavicLanguages and Literatures. He was co-author, with Raymond Bauer, of Nine Soviet Portraits(1955) and author of Crime and Punishment and the Critics (1961).Through his wide-ranging erudition, his knowledge of languages, and his clear mastery of thedialectical method of inquiry, Mr. Wasiolek has made himself a strong intellectual influence inthe College. Both students and colleagues have admired the skill with which he analyzes conceptsand have responded to his enthusiasm in communication. His work has set a challenging standardof performance in the teaching of humanities.THE AWARD OF HONORSAwarded General Honors with the Bachelor's Degree:Sally AkanBarry Jacob AlpherRobert Willey BartonBrenda Eleanor Fahs BeckKarl John BemesderferJohn Ralph BerryhillMorton Leon BurdickThomas W.
