ABRAM LINCOLN HARRIS, Professor of Economics in the CollegeAbram Lincoln Harris, distinguished economist, social theorist, and teacher, came to the Collegefrom an already eminent career at Howard University, where he had long been head of the department of economics. He is the author of scholarly books on Negro labor and Negro enterprise and,in recent years, of writings on Veblen, Marx, John Stuart Mill, and other social theorists. He hasplayed an influential role in shaping and teaching the Social Sciences curriculum since he camehere in 1946; especially notable have been his preceptorial classes on Marx, Mill, and British.Democratic Socialism. He has infected his students, in class and out, with the sober intellectualenthusiasm that is the special mode of his chosen discipline.MEYER W. ISENBERG, Associate Professor of the Humanities in the CollegeMeyer W. Isenberg received both his undergraduate and graduate training at the University, taking his Ph.D. degree in the Department of Classical Languages and Literatures. He has beena member of the College faculty since 1945, and his achievements provide a conspicuous instanceof a career devoted to undergraduate teaching that is marked by sustained, diversified, and productive intellectual inquiry. Mr. Isenberg has been primarily associated with the general Humanitiesprogram in the College and, by his distinguished contributions to every course in that sequence, has displayed a capacity to deal brilliantly not only with problems presented by various literaryspecies but with those involved in the teaching of history and even of the visual and musical arts. The scope of Mr. Isenberg'S interests and talents has been further revealed by his participationand leadership in the courses dealing with Organization, Methods, and Principles of Knowledge, with Non-Western Civilization, and, most recently, with Russian Civilization. Willing at alltimes to meet the challenges of a changing educational program, he has sought to explore, withrigor and energy, an ever widening range of humanistic areas. He has, at the same time, generouslyprovided the kind of administrative leadership exemplified by his effective chairmanship of thesecond-year Humanities course. "It is above all as a teacher, however, that Mr. Isenberg has impressed upon the College thestamp of his intellect, his learning, and his personality. He clearly possesses the ability to communicate to others the sources of his own deep satisfaction with humanistic works and problems. For many hundreds of students, his classes-conducted with devoted wisdom, wit, and imagination-have been uniquely memorable.IRVING KAPLANSKY, Professor, Department of MathematicsIrving Kaplansky came to the University as Instructor in 1946 after brilliant achievement as a:student at the University of Toronto, where he obtained his A.B. and A.M. degrees, and at Harvard University, where he obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1941. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in1948-49, and he became a Professor in 1956. His research has been largely in the fields of algebraand of functional analysis. He has contributed many basic results on the structure of Banachalgebras, locally compact groups, and group representations, and he has done fundamental workon aspects of ring theory. His work on infinite Abelian groups culminated in an outstanding bookon the subject, as did his work on differential algebra. The national community of mathematicians admires Mr. Kaplansky for the power of his research and for the elegance of his exposition. Both undergraduate and graduate students at the University have found his treatmentof mathematics original and illuminating to an extraordinary degree and his teaching at oncethorough, vivid, and inspiring. In his gift of exemplifying in every aspect of his work the richnessand beauty of creative intellectual life, Mr. Kaplansky keeps bright the best traditions of theUniversity.RAY KOPPELMAN, Assistant Professor of Biology in the CoIIege and Assistant Ptofessor, Department of BiochemistryRay Koppelman, who received his S.B. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago, hasbeen a member of the College faculty since 1956, jointly with the Department of Biochemistry, where he is carrying on an active program of research in the field of chemical aspects of viralinfections. He has been importantly involved in both the original conception and the detailedand continuing planning of the present Biology curriculum and has been most effective at all levelsof instruction-lecture, laboratory, and discussion. He has enthusiastically fostered faculty-student rapport as an outstandingly active Faculty Fellow and as Departmental Counselor to undergraduate students. He has recently been chosen by the Learning Research Institute to be a masterteacher for a national network television series in the fall. His competence and creativity will thusbe influencing higher education throughout the country.THE AWARD OF HONORSAwarded General Honors with the Bachelor's Degree:Deanna AbzugRichard Foster AtkinsonAaron BarnesJoyce Elaine BartelsJames Joseph CastlesLawrence B.
