HILDEBRAND, Associate Professor, Department of Physics and EnricoFermi Institute for Nuclear StudiesRoger H. Hildebrand came to the University as Assistant Professor in the Institute for NuclearStudies and the Department of Physics in 1952. He is a graduate of the University of California, where he also obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1951. His field of research is that of investigation of the socalled "strange" particles of high-energy physics, whose masses lie in the region between theelectron and the deuteron. He became Associate Professor in 1955, and since 1958 he has alsoheld the position of Associate Director of the Argonne National Laboratory and Director of itsHigh-Energy Physics Division. He has always been interested in teaching, and his lectures are notedfor their clarity. In this he is carrying on a family tradition, since his father, the well-known Professor Joel H. Hildebrand, has long been famous for the excellence of his teaching of chemistry.JANICE BROGUE SPOFFORD, Assistant Professor of Biology in the College andResearch Associate, Department of ZoologyMrs. Spofford received both her undergraduate and graduate training at the University of Chicago, where she took her S.B. degree in 1946 and her Ph.D. degree in 1955. Being a product of the College of the University, she has been especially sensitive to both its strengths and its weaknessesand has contributed significantly to the improvement of the teaching program in the sciences. Herversatility may be illustrated by the fact that she has taught both in the physical and biologicalsciences courses and in the natural sciences program and has been the examiner for the sequence. She played a significant and creative role in the recent reorganization of the biology curriculum inthe College and has been especially effective in the classroom, where she has emphasized thedevelopment of individual habits of inquiry. In addition to her teaching and curricula contributions,Mrs. Spofford has been carrying on an active research program in the field of genetics.KARL JOACHIM WEINTRAUB, Assistant Professor of History in the CollegeMr. Weintraub, who has taken his A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Chicago, has become in a few years of teaching a mainstay of the College course in the History of WesternCivilization. By patient and sympathetic study of the main themes of the Western cultural tradition, as these are presented in classic documents, he has conveyed to an ever growing group of responsive students a sense of man's intellectual and social achievements. He has won the affectionand respect of students of all ranges of ability. As a close student of Dutch history, he has contributed the insight of a specialist to the development of a course in general education. His combination of scholarly activity and devoted teaching embodies the best hopes of the emerging new College.DAVID GARDNER WILLIAMS, Professor of the Humanities in the CollegeMr. Williams holds the A.B., Mus.B., and A.M. degrees from the University of Wisconsin and theA.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. A member of the College faculty since 1945, hehas held the rank of Professor of the Humanities since 1956. His resourcefulness and efficiencyhave been abundantly displayed in such important administrative positions as senior examiner, course chairman, and staff chairman in the College Humanities program. But, despite the heavydemands of such assignments, he has retained at all times his central identity, that of a wise humanist and a memorable teacher. His wide and thoughtful reading, his musical gifts, and his profound understanding of works in the literary, musical, and visual arts have been employed withdistinguished success in the teaching of the general courses in the Humanities. With grace andhumor, yet with the sureness of conviction engendered by authentic learning, he has shared withhis students and colleagues his own enthusiastic engagement in the works of the human spirit.THE AWARD OF HONORSMembers elected to Beta at IIIinois Chapter ot Phi Beta Kappa on nominationat the University tor especial distinction in general scholarship in theUniversity:Michael Meredith BanSuzanne Doris BergerMarvin BramRosalind ConklinMichael Aaron EdidinBob Earl EllisonEarl Barry Fendelman Harvey Melvin FlaumenhaftHarriet GoldmanRussell KlemAlfred Berry ManasterJohn Wilbur Moohr.Carol Jean NeffPauline Shao Pan Susan Barbara RothMalcolm Jay ShermanNancy Jane SimonJudith Carolyn VictorDaniel Blahd WileMembers elected to Sigma Xi on nomination at the Departments at Sciencetor evidence oi ability in research work in Science:Beant Singh AhloowaliaAlan Richard AllnattSandra Lucille BellWilliam David BellAlvin George BursteinMagdalena CantoriaB.lrven DeVoreWilliam David FoulkesRobert A.
