He was appointed as an In­structor jointly to the staff of the Department of Botany and of the Divisional BiologySequence in 1948, a year before he received his Doctor's degree. His teaching is distinguishedby a felicitous blending of imagination, verve, rigor, and an understanding expectation of thehighest level of student performance. Although his research productivity and teaching at thegraduate level have been outstanding, he has contributed most generously of his time andenergy in undergraduate matters-in teaching elementary plant physiology, in planning andlecturing in the Divisional Biology Sequence, and in service in the past year as a Collegeadviser and as a member of the curriculum committee of the Biology Section of the College.In all these diverse tasks, his warm personality, broad perspective, and penetrating analyseshave enriched his contribution to undergraduate education.MERLIN S. BOWEN, Assistant Professor of the Humanities in the CollegeMerlin S. Bowen, an alumnus of the University of Chicago, has been a member of theCollege Faculty since 1947. He is currently an Assistant Professor of the Humanities. Hislearning, wit, and literary sensitivity have made him a strikingly effective teacher in generalcourses in the humanities; in recent years he has served as chairman of Humanities 3, ageneral course in writing and criticism. The ability to take an individual and unhackneyed lookat accepted views made his recent book, The Jacksonian Persuasion, a notable monograph;for this contribution the American Historical Association last winter gave Mr. Meyers itscoveted Dunning Prize.
