His clarity and force as an expositor and his penetrating graspof economic and political processes have established him as a distinguished teacher in the socialsciences. In his classes, he conveys a rich and complex sense of the opportunities and responsi­bilities involved in democratic citizenship. As teacher, as chairman of a general course con­cerned with problems of public policy, as patient and resourceful adviser, he has devotedhimself unstintingly to the education of Chicago undergraduates for a quarter of a century.VIOLA MANDERFELD, Associate Professor in the College and in the De­partment of Germanic Languages and LiteraturesUpon graduation from Barnard College, Miss Manderfeld came to the University of Chi­cago for graduate study. She joined the Faculty of the College as Instructor in 1944, was pro­moted to Assistant Professor in 1947, and was advanced to Associate Professor in 1950. Withthoroughness, zeal, and imagination she has launched hundreds of students in the study of theGerman language and literature. The influence of her wisdom and skill has spread far beyondthe University of Chicago; through her work in the training of teachers, and through a hostof professional associations, formal and informal, she has given vitality to .the ideal of dedi­cated and sensitive teaching of foreign languages.STUART MALCOLM TAVE, Assistant Professor of English in the Divisionof the HumanitiesMr. Tave received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1943, thedegree of Master of Arts from Harvard University in 1947, and the degree of Doctor of Phi­losophy from Oxford University in 1950. A specialist in English literature, with particularinterest in the theory of comedy and the essay, he came to the University of Chicago in 1951.His teaching both in the Department of English and in the College has been distinguishedby a happy blending of learning and vivacity, intellectual rigor, and sympathetic understand­ing. His sensitivity to central literary values, his tact, and his gift for direct and trenchantstatement have made him equally effective in the lecture hall, the small classroom, and indi­vidual conferences with undergraduates.IZAAK WIRSZUP, Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the CollegeA native of Poland, Mr. Wirszup was graduated from the Stephen Batory University ofWilno in 1939. He received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chi­cago in 1955. He became an Instructor in Mathematics in the College in 1949, and was pro­moted to Assistant Professor in 1952. For the past decade Mr. Wirszup has addressed himselfenergetically and reflectively to fundamental questions of mathematical pedagogy. His ownclasses, as well as the work of the Mathematics Staff in the College generally, have been en­riched by his studies of East European educational practice in the field of mathematics; hehas also accepted an active role in work that the University has undertaken to improve theteaching of secondary-school mathematics.
