THE LLEWELLYN JOHN AND HARRIET MANCHESTERQUANTRELL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING ARE MADE TOMAURICE BROWNING CRAMER, Professor of the Humanities in the CollegeMr. Cramer joined the Faculty of the College in 1945, and since 1953 has held the rank ofProfessor of the Humanities. He is a graduate of Princeton University, where he earned thedegrees of Bachelor of Arts in 1931, Master of Arts in 1934, and Doctor of Philosophy in 1937.His field of special interest is English literature. His teaching has been notable for its fidelityto the central literary disciplines of careful, sensitive reading, and clear, thoughtful writing.Out of his own practice as novelist and poet have come particular insights and an urbanityof spirit which have enriched his classes. In helping students to understand man's artisticachievements, he has demonstrated the qualities of a thoroughgoing humanist: comprehensiveness without cant, and precision without pedantry.REUEL NICHOLAS DENNEY, Professor of the Social Sciences in the CollegeA graduate of Dartmouth College in 1932, Mr. Denney entered the academic professionafter a career in magazine journalism with Time and Fortune. In 1947 he became an assistantprofessor of the social sciences in the College, and in 1956 he was promoted to professor. Tothe development of the Social Sciences 2 course, of which he has served as chairman, Mr.Denney has brought unusually acute perceptiveness of the nuances of social existence in contemporary America. A poet and literary critic as well as a student of social relationships, hehas given his students a rich sense of the human realities which are summed up in the generalizations of the social scientist. His energies as a teacher have been expended unsparingly in theliberation of the student's imagination.THOMAS SEYMOUR LEE, Associate Professor of Chemistry in the Divisionof the Physical SciencesMr. Lee received the degree of Bachelor of Science from the California Institute of Technology in 1943 and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Minnesota in1949. He was appointed to the Faculty of the Department of Chemistry in 1949. As one whoregards teaching as the highest among his professional obligations, Mr. Lee has conducted hisclasses with concern for the welfare of the individual students, with sympathetic understanding of their difficulties, but without relaxation of the high standards of conduct and scholarship which he exemplifies.GEORGE LOUIS PLAYE, Associate Professor of French in the CollegeAfter receiving the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Brown University,Mr. Playe earned the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Illinois in 1949.A member of the Faculty of the College since 1946, he has served as chairman of the FrenchStaff since 1953. While giving his students substantial instruction in the French language,Mr. Playe has also succeeded in communicating his own understanding and appreciation ofFrench culture. He has been resourceful in relating the work in French to other aspects of theCollege curriculum, especially through the French-language version of the Humanities 3 courseand through the consideration of general linguistic problems. All these activities have helpedto clarify the role of foreign-language instruction in the program of the College. .VII.
