GALL, Assistant Professor of the Natural Sciences in the CollegeMr. Gall received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Lake Forest College in 1931. Hepursued graduate education at the University of Chicago, where he earned the degree ofMaster of Science in 1942 and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, with specialization inbotany, in 1947. He joined the Faculty of the College in 1950 and is now chairman of theNatural Sciences 3 course. His broad and precise knowledge of biological investigation, hisdedication to the development of sound liberal education in the sciences, and his discerningpractical judgments on how scientific materials can be taught have not only made Mr. Gallhimself an unusually effective teacher but have also assisted many of his colleagues in theirwork.CHRISTIAN WILHELM MACKAUER, Associate Professor of History in the CollegeBorn and educated in Germany, where he taught in Frankfurt from 1921 until 1937, Mr.Mackauer came to the United States in 1940 and joined the Faculty of the College in 1943.Since 1948 he has been an Associate Professor of History in the College, and for the past twoyears he has served as chairman of the course dealing with the History of Western Civiliza­tion. In his teaching he has been exceptionally resourceful and responsible in making acces­sible to undergraduates the fruits of his own lifelong study of the ancient classical world.Over the years he has given hundreds of students significant and stimulating insights intothe historical development of Western man's institutions from the rise of the Athenian polityto the present. He has successfully "naturalized" in an American college the best traditionsof western Europe's humanistic education.JOSHUA CHARLES TAYLOR, Assistant Professor of ArtA graduate of Reed College, where he earned the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1939 andthe degree of Master of Arts in 1946, Mr. Taylor became a member of the Faculty in 1949.His graduate education in art was undertaken at Princeton University, which granted himthe degree of Master of Fine Arts in 1949 and which will next week confer on him the degreeof Doctor of Philosophy. Mr. Taylor'S teaching both in the College and in the Departmentof Art has been informed by his conviction of the importance of helping students to see andunderstand what is most noteworthy and significant in individual works of the visual arts.His sensitive judgment, scholarly integrity, and clear exposition have enriched the artisticexperience of his students. As chairman of the Humanities 1 course, he has worked to main­tain the quality and vitality of this pioneering effort to introduce students to the visual,musical, and literary arts.ROSALIE H. WAX, Assistant Professor of Anthropology in the CollegeMrs. Wax has been a member of the Faculty of the College for nine years, serving as anInstructor in the Social Sciences from 1947 to 1951 and as Assistant Professor since 1951. Shecompleted her undergraduate education at the University of California, and received thedegree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1952. To the develop­ment of the Social Sciences 2 course, which deals with personality and culture, Mrs. Wax hasmade notable contributions; with imagination and good sense she has brought her ownspecial competence in anthropology into fruitful relationship with the other concerns of thecourse.
