HARRIS, Associ�te Professor of PhysiologyMr. Harris received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota in1936 and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology from the University of Pennsyl­vania in 1942. He continued his postgraduate training as a National Research Council Fellowin Zoology at the University of California and as Eli Lilly Fellow at Stanford Universityand the California Institute of Technology. He served as Research Associate in Zoology atthe University of Pennsylvania and as Lecturer in Biology at Bryn Mawr College beforecoming to the University of Chicago in 1947. With his unusually broad and excellent train­ing in zoology, physiology, and biochemistry, Mr. Harris is eminently qualified to teachgeneral physiology to undergraduate students in the University's integrated Biology Se­quence courses. In addition, his infectious enthusiasm for his subject and his devotion toteaching have inspired students in his classes to approach their study of biology with antic­ipation, eagerness, and zest.GWIN J. KOLB, Assistant Professor of EnglishMr. Kolb received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Millsaps College in 1941, the de­gree of Master of Arts in 1946 and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1949 from theUniversity of Chicago. He has been Editorial Assistant of Modern Philology since 1946and a member of the Faculty since 1949. Mr. Kolb is co-author of a recent book on Dr.Johnson's Dictionary which has received national recognition, and author of numerousscholarly articles and reviews. As colleague and teacher, he is inexhaustibly generous of histime and always reliable in his results. An imaginative scholar, he is that rare teacher whois able to communicate his enthusiasm and his high standards in, the daily and living prac­tice of the classroom.JOHN PHILIP NETHERTON, Assistant Professor of SPanish in the CollegeMr. Netherton has served for the past five years, with the exception of one year devotedto literary research in Spain, as Assistant Dean of the College. On July 1 he will becomeDean of Students in the College. A graduate of the University of Chicago who received hisPh.D. degree in Romance Languages in 1951, Mr. Netherton has been unusually successfulin combining the teaching of Spanish with instruction concerning problems of general lin­guistic structure. During the past year he has also acted as secretary of the College Councilon Tutorial Studies, the body charged with administering the new tutorial A.B. program.CHARLES WILLIAM WEGENER, Assistant Professor of the Humanities in theCollegeMr. Wegener completed both his undergraduate and his graduate education at the Univer­sity of Chicago; he received the A.B. degree in 1942, and the Ph.D. degree, in the Depart­ment of Philosophy, in 1950. He joined the Faculty of the College in 1947 and is nowAssistant Professor of the Humanities and Chairman of the course on Organizations,Methods, and Principles of Knowledge. Mr. Wegener's teaching has been marked by philo­sophical precision, intellectual responsibility, and great inventiveness. In his own classroom,in his work as course chairman, and in association with his colleagues, he has constantlysought to clarify the goals of liberal education and to improve the means employed forapproaching those goals.VII.
