First appointed to the Faculty in 1947, he has been Assistant Professorof English in the College since 1951. As a teacher of writing, he has been unusually successful inassisting students to achieve clarity, force, and felicity in the expression of their ideas. His influencein directing serious attention to the problem of student writing has also been felt in other Collegecourses, notably Humanities 3. Mr. Ashin's concern with the student's educational experience hasnot been confined to the classroom; as an adviser and as chairman of a committee on student ori­entation, he has taken an active interest in the study of the extra-curricular influences which bearupon the process of education.WELLS FENTON CHAMBERLIN, Assistant Professor of French in the Department of RomanceLanguages and LiteraturesMr. Chamberlin received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in 1936, and the de­gree of Master of Arts from the University of Chicago in 1938. He was appointed to the Faculty in1946, and was promoted to Assistant Professor of French in 1952. In introducing students to Frenchliterature, he has shown himself to be both an expert linguist and a perceptive interpreter of belles­lettres. He has been inventive in creating, and resourceful in applying, fruitful approaches to theproblem of language learning. Mr. Chamberlin has maintained high standards in literary scholar­ship and linguistic accomplishment, and he has kept clearly in mind the importance of developingthe full human significance of what he is teaching.DONALD MEIKLEJOHN, Associate Professor of Philosophy in the CollegeMr. Meiklejohn received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin in 1930,and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University in 1936. After teaching at Dart­mouth College and the College of William and Mary, he joined the Faculty of the College in 1946.As chairman for some years of Social Sciences 3, he has had much to do with the development ofa course designed to educate students in the habit of deliberating rationally on problems of contem­porary public policy. To this work he brings sound judgment, zest, and a highly developed capacityfor stimulating students to understand more fully the society in which they live. College studentswishing to undertake individual work, through the writing of preceptorial or honors papers, havefound in Mr. Meiklejohn an informed, generous, and helpful mentor.BEATRICE MINTZ, Assistant Professor of the Biological Sciences in the CollegeMiss Mintz received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Hunter College in 1941, and the degrees ofMaster of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the State University of Iowa in 1944 and 1946, re­spectively. Appointed to the Faculty in 1946, she has taught in the College since that year, exceptfor a year as a Fulbright research scholar at the Universities of Paris and Strasbourg. In 1949 she be­came an Assistant Professor of the Biological Sciences in the College. In Natural Sciences 2 she hasdemonstrated high qualities as a teacher: imagination, intellectual responsibility, and clarity. She hasapproached her work with a seriousness and a thoroughness which have been valuable to both herstudents and her colleagues.VII.
