THE AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN UNDERGRADUATE TEACHINGThe awards jor excellence in Undergraduate Teaching are made to; JOHN OLIVER HUTCHENS, Professor and Chairman of the Department of PhysiologyMr. Hutchens received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Butler University in 1936, and the degree ofDoctor of Philosophy from the Johns Hopkins University in 1939. First appointed to the Faculty of theDivision of the Biological Sciences in 1941, Mr. Hutchens became Associate Professor and Chairmanof the Department of Physiology in 1946. In 1951, Mr. Hutchens devoted a large portion of his timeto teaching and curricular work in biological science in the College. As a member of the staff of NaturalSciences 2, he not only taught with marked success but he achieved an authentic acquaintance with theCollege curriculum in biological science which enabled him to contribute substantially to the staff'srevision of that course and to the inter-faculty discussions which made possible the development of thenew Bachelor of Science curriculum. In these discussions, Mr. Hutchens maintained scrupulously aproper balance between the claims and criteria of general and of specialized education in science.ROBERT MONROE PALTER, Assistant Professor of the Natural Sciences in the CollegeMr. Palter received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1943 and the degree ofDoctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1952. First appointed as an Instructor in theNatural Sciences in the College in 1948, Mr. Palter became an Assistant Professor in 1951. From thefirst, Mr. Palter showed himself to be an excellent teacher, and he has since exhibited the highest quali­ties as chairman of Natural Sciences 1. All his work has been marked by a demand for authenticity anda detached seriousness which have had the most valuable consequences for the work of both his col­leagues and his students. VJ:y GROSVENOR WILLIAM COOPER, Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Music; Asso­ciate Professor of the Humanities in the CollegeMr. Cooper received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in 1933 and the Master ofArts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Harvard University in 1936 and 1939, respectively. Firstappointed to the Faculty of the College in 1947 as Assistant Professor of the Humanities, Mr. Cooperwas promoted to Associate Professor in the College and in the Division of the Humanities in 1952. Atpresent he is Chairman of the Department of Music and chairman of the staff of Humanities 1. An exem­plary teacher of music, Mr. Cooper has on several occasions been asked to illustrate for entering studentsthe kind of teaching of the arts which is carried on in Humanities 1. As chairman of Humanities 1, hehas been both inventive and exacting in meeting with his colleagues the many intricate problems whichare involved in planning and teaching a course which attempts to deal comparatively with several artswhile respecting the specific differences among them.EDWARD WElL ROSENHEIM, JR., Assistant Professor of the Humanities in the CollegeMr. Rosenheim received the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees fromthe University of Chicago. He was first appointed to the College Faculty in 1947. Since 1950, he has beenAssistant Professor of the Humanities in the College. As a teacher in the classroom, as chairman ofHumanities 3, and as a lecturer to a variety of audiences, Mr. Rosenheim has instilled in students, col­leagues, and others a sense of the human importance of the literary arts; and, with urbanity and zest,he has exemplified in his own work and person those civilized values with which the humanities are cen­trally concerned.VII.
