THE AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN UNDERGRADUATE TEACHINGThe awardsfor excellence in Undergraduate Teaching are made toWILMA ROBB EBBITT, Assistant Professor of English in the CollegeMrs. Ebbitt received the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Saskat­chewan in 1938 and 1940, respectively, and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Brown Universityin 1943. First appointed to the Faculty of the College in 1946 as Instructor in English, Mrs. Ebbitt hasbeen an Assistant Professor of English since 1948. In her first years in the College, Mrs. Ebbitt quicklyestablished herself as an unusually able teacher of writing. Subsequently, as chairman of the principalcourse in writing in the College, and as a member of the combined staff responsible for uniting work inwriting with practical criticism of the arts, she has shown a remarkable capacity for insuring full andeffective discussion and collaboration among colleagues of diverse interests and points of view.ALAN SIMPSOJ'fi' Assistant Professor of HistoryA graduate of Balliol College, Oxford, Mr. Simpson was first appointed to the Faculty of the College in1946. He taught Social Sciences 1 in the College until 1948, when he became a member of the Departmentof History. In his teaching and writing in the College and in the Department of History, Mr. Simpson'ssuperior powers of interpretation and expression have been of unusual value to many of the University'sstudents of American and English history.JAY COLER WILLIAMS, Assistant Professor of the Social Sciences in the CollegeFirst appointed to the Faculty of the College as Instructor in the Social Sciences in 1945, Mr. Williamsalso served as examiner until his appointment in 1949 as chairman of Social Sciences 1. A student of bothAmerican history and American education, Mr. Williams has added to his unusual excellence as a teacherin the classroom an increasing insight into the problems confronting students who are attempting to un­derstand their own national past in such a manner as to make it a part of their general education in socialscience. Mr. Williams' perceptive and judicious grasp of these problems has been of great benefit to hiscolleagues and his students in Social Sciences 1.ALFRED LUNT PUTNAM, Associate Professor of Mathematics in the CollegeMr. Putnam received the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1938 from Hamilton College and the degrees ofMaster of Arts in 1939 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1942 from Harvard University. He joined theFaculty of the College in 1945, following a three-year term as Instructor in Mathematics at Yale Uni­versity, and has been Associate Professor of Mathematics in the College since 1950. Mr. Putnam hasserved for two years as chairman of each of the two College courses in mathematics. His classroomteaching, and his contributions to curriculum development and course administration, have been markedby careful reflection, enthusiasm, and warm personal concern for his students and his colleagues, all ofwhom hold him in the highest regard.VII.
