THE AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN UNDERGRADUATE TEACHINGThe awards for excellence in Undergraduate Teaching are made toWILLIAM CHAPMAN BRADBURY, JR., Assistant Professor of the Social Sciences in the CollegeMr. Bradbury received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in I936 from Swarthmore College and the degreeof Master of Arts in I939 from Columbia University. He served as Instructor in Citizenship and Sociologyat Hobart College from I939 to �941. First appointed to the Faculty of the College in I94I, he returnedin I946 after three years of military service and was appointed Assistant Professor of the Social Sciencesin the College. As a teacher, Mr. Bradbury has been particularly concerned with the actual impactupon individual students and upon the student community of the curriculum of the College. As astudent of the relations among the races of mankind, he has employed his theoretical knowledge in vari­ous practical attempts to improve these relations within the United States. To both collegiate and na­tional communities, he has made contributions of unusual excellence and promise.WILLIAM HERMAN LEWIS MEYER, JR., Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the CollegeMr. Meyer received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in I936 from Westminster College, and the degreesof Master of Science in I937 and Doctor of Philosophy in I947 from the University of Chicago. He be­came a member of the Faculty of the College in I946, having taught at Bowling Green State University,the Georgia School of Technology, and the College of Wooster; and having served for two of the waryears as a research mathematician. He has been Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the College since1948. As chairman for two years of the Mathematics I course, and of the Mathematics 2 course duringthe past year, Mr. Meyer has contributed substantially, and with conspicuous energy and imagination,to the development of the College mathematics program. His classroom teaching, similarly marked, hasbeen outstanding.JOSEPH JAMES CEITHAML, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, Mr. Ceithaml holds two degrees from the University of Chicago, having received the degree ofBachelor of Science in I937 and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in I941. In I943 he began an associa­tion with the College which has involved various types of service. He acted as College Adviser of pre­medical students. As Head of one of the dormitories in Burton-Judson Courts he played an importantrole in the development of the extra-curricular program. He made major contributions in planning theteaching and testing program of the general course in the Biological Sciences. In I947 Mr. Ceithamljoined the Operational Staff of the Divisional Biology Sequence in the Division of Biological Sciences,and was put in charge of the Biochemistry component of that sequence. The consistent success of thiscourse since its initiation is owed in large part to the planning and management for which he was re­sponsible.VI.
