A manuscript of theBologna school of scribes of about the middle of the thirteenthcentury. This is a medieval annotated copy of the fourth divisionof the Corpus Juris Civilis; its exceptionally fine workmanship andrich illumination would indicate that it was executed for some greatprince, very possibly the Emperor Frederick II. It is adjudged to beone of the eight oldest known manuscript copies of Justinian.Liber de nov em scienciis and Sermones Cistercienses. Two manuscriptsbound together, written about A.D. 1400, apparently at the Abbeyof Melsa, Yorkshire, England. The first manuscript includes severalastronomical diagrams, including one illustrating an eclipse of themoon which presupposes the roundness of the earth,-this in thecentury before Columbus and nearly two centuries before Galileo.Miraculae Sanctae Virginis and others. An eleventh century manuscriptof English origin decorated with a remarkable painting of the Virginand Child, grotesques, and initials. Owing to the zeal of the agentsof Henry VIII English manuscripts of the Miracles of the HolyVirgin are very rare.Registrum Brevium. A manuscript of about A.D. 1320 written in theEnglish court hand. A collection of writs which illustrates changesin the law during the reigns of Edward I and II, and reflects animportant stage in the growth of the English law. This Collectioncontains a much larger number of writs than any that has beenpublished.Magna Charta and Statutes.
