licago MaroonSPECIALISSUE The University of Chicago Tuesday, May 1, 1973■Robert Miller Dear Reader,This photo contest was conceived by Paul Bates, thebusiness manager of the Maroon, in mid-January. Lisa Capell,editor-in-chief, mentioned it at a staff meeting and I decidedto accept the job of running it. The rules and regulations wereset up in a week and the contest was announced on Tuesday,February 6. Within two weeks, the New University Bank hadoffered $100 for the grand prize, and $50 gift certificateswere given by Swain Drugs, Model Camera, Able Camera, andthe U. of C. Bookstore. The Maroon then decided to put upfour $25 second place prizes and four $10 third place prizes.Meanwhile Brad Parker of the Photon Montage saw the ads inthe Maroon for the contest and made the grand prize evenbigger: the option of becoming the artist-in-residence at thePhoton Montage for the month of June. He also volunteeredthe use of the photo gallery for displaying the winning pic¬tures plus several highly rated honorable mentions.Ads appeared in the Maroon every week for the next fiveweeks until Spring break. But this was not enough to reach allof Hyde Park. Three posters were designed, but only one wasused. Even a mistake in the poster did not hinder the assaultof the posters upon the University and Hyde Park area onMarch 1. "An uncivilized chemistry student" was seen onseveral different occasions roaming the quads with a contestposter taped to the back of his coat. But by Spring break lessthan fifteen entries had been entered and visions of failuredanced through my head.By March 30 the number of entries was almost doubled-with only one week left. Photos trickled in a little more eachday until Thursday April 5. The number of entries rose from50 on Tuesday to nearly 110 by Thursday night. We werefiguring on people waiting until the last minute, but this wasunreal. Over seventy entries - ten more than I had expectedfor the total number of entries - came in on Friday, makingthe total almost 190 with over 700 photos submitted.2 - The Chicago Maroon * Tuesday, May 1,19731V\Things started going wrong on the judging day. One of theadvertised judges could not be contacted and was not presentfor voting. One of the Maroon staffers who had been chosento judge had left the Maroon, another had to cover a pressconference with Alice Cooper, and I was delayed due to theunexpected appearence of the White Sox at the Field House.Despite all this, the photos were judged on the scheduled dayby Robert Kotalik, head photographer of the Chicago Sun-Times, Maury Faulstein, photo editor of the Sun-Times, andmyself. There were some arguments, but the winners weredecided on fairly easily. The biggest arguments came whendeciding the grand prize winner. The first place photo in theHyde Park People category was picked as the best single pic*ture of the contest, but the winner of the Hyde Park Land¬scape category had seve;al other photos picked very high inthe contest. And the winner of the University student Land¬scape category also had many good pictures. The finaljudging was between the three photographers. David Joel(Hyde Park Landscape) finally won out. Since he was picked asGrand Prize winner, he could not win the first place, too.(Rules stated that no photographer can win more than once.)One of the judges argued, however, that no one can win thegrand prize without winning a first place. But it was decidedthat since Joel had won first place and then was picked asgrand prize winner, the decision was fair and that the nextthree pictures should be moved up.Congratulations to David Joel and all the other winners. I'dlike to thank everyone who entered the contest, andeveryone who helped make this possible. I hope you enjoyreading this special issue. I'm looking forward to next year'scontest.Sincerely,Robert Newcombe4TOP LEFT: D Baron, UC staffMIDDLE LEFT: David Green, Hyde Park residentBOTTOM LEFT: Lawrence Pry, Hyde Park residentTOP RIGHT: Nina Freedman, Hyde Park residentBOTTOM RIGHT: Leland G Min, studentA6 - The Chicago Maroon - Tuesday, May 1, 1973 TOP LEFT: Donald Alexander, Hyde Park residentBOTTOM LEFT: Carl Hampton, Hyde Park residentTOP RIGHT: John Feldman, studentBOTTOM RIGHT: Day Williams, student1Third FlawTuesday, May 1, 1973 - The Chicago Maroon - 7ATOP LEFT: Charles Whitman,Hyde Parle residentBOTTOM LEFT: David Goldston,Hyde Park residentTOP RIGHT: Joshua B Fein, studentBOTTOM RIGHT: B Rockwood, student8 - The Chicogo Maroon - Tuesday, May 1, 1973TiiAsrlnv May 1. 1973 - Tho Chicago Maroon - 9TOP LEFT: Ann Goddard, studentBOTTOM LEFT: Jeff Bowen, studentTOP RIGHT: Gerrit Dangremond, Hyde Park residentBOTTOM RIGHT: George Valevicius, Hyde Park resident10 - The Chicago Maroon - Tuesday, May 1, 1973Tuesday, May 1, 1973 The Chicago MaroonDavid Joel is the Grand Prize Winnerof the First Annual Chicago MaroonHyde Park Photo Contest. These are his entries.More of Mr. Joel's work, along withthe rest of the winners, may be seenat the Photon Montage,11 Vj E. Yes. Quite a number ofJewish students are turning on to Christnowadays. Not seven out of eight as weshow here, tongue in cheek, but it is asignificant trend all over the nation. Why'? We don’t have any simple answers. All we know is that a lot of people’slives are being changed.How9 Some say that the deep emptinessthey used to feel is gone Others tellhow anxiety and loneliness have beenreplaced by love and a new sense ofbelonging All of them are convinced ofone thing They have discovered a deeppersonal experience. It’s not easy to explain about Jesus Howhe works in people’s lives. Or how hefills the emptiness and loneliness Theonly way a person can understand is toexperience it personallynow ^Ges that happen9 It starts by rec¬ognizing a need If you don’t think youhave any, Jesus said he couldn't helpyou But if you feel you have someneeds, and would like an answer, justask Jesus Is it really that simple? That depends onyou. Take, for instance, the seven stu¬dents in the above picture. Each of themsimply prayed and told God they didn’tunderstand all this, but they believedChrist could change their lives. It worked! Something happened. Forthe first time, they experienced a close¬ness to God. Only one thing happenedthey didn’t expect The feeling didn’t goaway. It stayed, and grew stronger eachday. Can this experience happen to you9Maybe. If you recognize a need in yourlife and really want Jesus to meet it —he will. Christ said that he came to giveyou a more abundant life.f you wantjhat to !',Sj5jjSr. just ask himr.G'w but don’t play with Him. Ifou ask really mean it. That’s the onlyvay Christ can make it happen to vou.If you do, we can promise you one thingIt will probably be the greatest experi¬ence of your life. Then just give us a call right here inChicago at 338-5959. Just tell usyou did, and it worked You won’t haveto explain We’ll understand D I just asked Jesus, and it reallyworked! Please send me the stories ofhow Christ changed the lives of theJews for Jesus in this picture too.□ I am almost convinced, but Iwould like more information.
