Calendar - 336SOME RECENT ACTIONS OF UNIVERSITY RULINGBODIES.Several of the Ruling Bodies of the Universityhave recently adopted recommendations of committees appointed by them which embody changesin University policy of interest to the generalbody of the members of the University./. CONCERNING CHANGES IN CONNECTION WITH THECONVOCATION.The following measure was adopted by theUniversity Council. It was recommended to theBoard of Trustees (and adopted by that body) :1. That the Convocation be held regularly onthe Tuesday before the Friday preceding thetwenty-fifth day of September, December, March,and June.2. That the quarterly examinations be held onthe Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday' next following the Convocation.3. That the Senior, Graduate, and Divinity Finals be held on the successive days of the weekpreceding the Convocation.4. That the Convocation Sermon heretoforecalled the "Baccalaureate Sermon" be given onthe Sunday preceding the Convocation.5. That the Convocation Reception, heretoforecalled, "The Senior College Reception" be heldon the Monday evening preceding Convocation.That the Alumni exercises be held on Convocation Day or the day preceding.7. That the Monday preceding Convocationbe devoted to Class Day Exercises, and in theSpring Quarter the annual exercises of the PhiBeta Kappa Society.8. That in the Spring Quarter no lectures orrecitations be held on Convocation Day, or theday preceding.9. That degrees or certificates be given only tocandidates present in person at the Convocations,unless by a special vote of the University Council.10. That the first Sunday of the Quarter bedesignated ¦" Congregation Sunday" instead of"Convocation Sunday."11. That whenever it seems necessary a Midsummer Convocation be held on the last day ofthe first term of the Summer Quarter.12. That in case a student about to take abaccalaureate degree or a Junior College certificate be not excused from the quarterly examina-334 UNIVERSITY RECORDtions, a special examination be held not laterthan the Wednesday preceding the day of Convocation.Note. — In all cases, the above mentioned students areexpected to attend all the exercises of the course throughthe week preceding Convocation.//. CONCERNING CHANGES IN THE HOLDING &F EXAMINATIONSFOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY.The following action was taken by the Faculties of the Graduate School of Arts andLiterature and of the Ogden (Graduate) Schoolof Science (in joint session) :The following rule was appended to the noteon p. 62, volume 1, of the Annual Register for1898-9.The candidate is permitted to present himselffor examination in his secondary subject as soonas he has fulfilled the requirements of the department concerned.In case this rule is adopted, we recommendthat the examination in the secondary subject beconducted by the members of the departmentconcerned, with the same formalities as at present,and that the grade attained by the candidate bereported to the Recorder. And that, in case ofsuch anticipation of the secondary examinationor examinations, the examination in the majorsubject be conducted by the members of thedepartment concerned, by an appointed representative of the minor departments or of each ofthem, and by any other members of the saiddepartment that may choose to attend, and by anappointed representative of some other department.///. CONCERNING REORGANIZATION OF THE METHODS OF REGULATING PUBLIC APPEARANCES OF STUDENTS.The Administrative Board of Student Organization, Publications and Exhibitions adopted thefollowing provisions relating to the public appearances of students :1. That contests in Public Speaking shall beunder the charge of the Department of PublicSpeaking.2. That musical exhibitions shall be under thecharge of the Director of Music. 3. That social affairs shall be under the chargeof the Dean of Women.4. That student publications shall be underthe charge of the Department of English.5. That a representative of each of thesedepartments shall be ex officio a member of theBoard.IV. CONCERNING THE CHANGES IN SPELLING RECOMMENDED BYTHE BOARD OF THE UNIVERSITY PRESS.The University Senate voted Disapproval of therecommendation of the Administrative Boardof the University Press that the list of wordswith changed spelling accepted by the NationalEducational Association be adopted for use inthe official publications and journals of the University.[V. CONCERNING A CHANGE IN THE COLLEGE FOR TEACHERS.The Faculties of the College for Teachers andthe Class-study Department (in joint session)made the following recommendation to the Boardof Trustees :. ,>1. That the Class-study Department and College for Teachers be united under one name.2. That the fees be reduced to $10 per Majorand $5 per Minor.3. That no one should be permitted to giveinstruction in the College who does not hold aregular appointment in the departmental faculties of the University, and that so far as possibleeach instructor in the College be permitted tooffer at some time in the year a course in the University proper. /VI.
