Synopsis of the Invertebrate Groups. — - Theplan of the course is to make a study of eachof the invertebrate groups, including adultanatomy, embryology, general biology, systematic relations and distribution, and covering the whole field in two years. Duringthe Autumn and Winter Quarters the workconsists of lectures, laboratory work andreading, and during the Spring Quarter ofwork in the field supplemented by study inthe laboratory of the forms collected. It isproposed to study, as far as possible, theliving animal and especial reference is therefore made to the fauna of this region.The work this year, beginning in theWinter Quarter, covers the group Mollusca.This will be supplemented by the work ofnext year covering other groups. All students who receive theirJunior College Certificates between October i,^99 and July i, 1900 may become candidatesfor this scholarship which will be awarded uponthe basis of, (a) excellence of class-room work inLatin (which must include the required threeMajors based upon four units offered for admission and at least one junior elective in Latin)and, (b) a special examination upon the subjectsnamed below to be held May 24 and 25, 1900:1) History of Roman Literature to 138 A. Laing.THE GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN LATIN.A Graduate Scholarship in the Latin department is awarded each year to the student whopassed the most creditable examination on certainspecified subjects. Any student who receives theBachelor's degree from the University in the yearin which a given examination is held, and hastaken, in addition to the four admission units, atleast six majors in Latin in the University, maypresent himself at the examination as a candidatefor the scholarship, which is available for any three quarters of the year beginning with the following July. The next examination will be heldin May 1900. The subjects for this year areVirgil, ^neid, VII-XII, and Livy, XXVIII, 40-XXX. Those who think of competing shouldsend their names to Professor Abbott or ProfessorHendrickson.CURRENT EVENTS.The Sixth Meeting of the Chicago Section ofthe American Mathematical Society was held atthe University on Thursday and Friday, December 28 and 29, 1899. Among the papers read bymembers of the University were the following :"The Elliptic sigma-functions considered as aspecial case of the hyper- elliptic sigma-functions,"by Professor Bolza ; " Note on the unilateral surface of Moebius," by Associate Professor Maschke;"A particular class of periodic solutions of theproblem of three bodies," by F. R. Moulton.On December 8, 1899, a call was issued bymembers of the American Society of Naturalistsliving in the vicinity of Chicago for a meeting toconsider the advisability of forming a westernbranch of the society. The response was favorable and the meeting appointed for December 28and 29 at the University of Chicago. The programme consisted of a meeting for organizationat 10:00 a.m. Thursday, a discussion at 3:00 p.m.on the Methods and Results of LimnologicalWork, Dinner at the Quadrangle Club at 6:30p.m. On Friday a general meeting for the reading of papers was held. Contributions were readby Assistant Professor Davenport, Drs.
