Calendar ------- 202THE AUTUMN QUARTER AT THE AFFILIATEDINSTITUTIONS.( Continued from p. f 79. )Princeton-Yale School. — The year hasopened auspiciously and with a largely increasedattendance. During the summer the school building was remodeled to a large extent, and manyimprovements made. A large and well-lightedAssembly Hall, of sufficient seating capacity toaccommodate the entire school, is perhaps themost appreciated of these improvements. An athletic clubroom has also been set apartand equipped for the use of the different athleticteams.Greater interest than for several years is beingshown along all lines by the students. Athleticsand scholarship are given their due, and neithersuffers. The teaching force has ,been augmented andstrengthened by the addition of excellent men. Every department is ably represented and managed, and there seems to be no reason why thework done this year should not be better thanever before. Payson S. Wild,Associate Principal.Bradley Polytechnic Institute commencedits third year of work on September 26. Theenrollment at opening was 313 ; the total enrollment for the quarter will, of course, be largerthan this. The increase from last year's enrollment is about 25 per cent. The work of theschool is starting off smoothly and successfully, and with a vigor which promises a highly successful year. The institution opens this fall withthe advantage of many minor improvements inbuilding and equipment. A large and valuablecollection of biological, geological, and otherspecimens has been installed in Bradley Hall ;this collection is the gift of the Peoria ScientificAssociation, the association feeling that the institute is the most fitting custodian of this museum.Edward O. Sisson,Dean. The John B. Stetson University has openedwith an increase of 30 per cent, over the attendance to this date last session. The total registration last year was 290. The indications arethat it will reach considerably over 300 this year. The date of opening was October 3. President200 UNIVERSITY RECORDForbes delivered an address on " The Necessityof Thoroughness for Success in Life." Amongthe visitors were Mr. and Mrs. John B. Stetson, who have given more than $300,000 to the University. It has been officially announced that aSchool of Law will be added October 1, 1900,which will be modeled after the best schools ofthe kind. A friend has donated an excellent lawlibrary. The work in English has lately beenexpanded, Mr. T. H. Briggs, Jr., of the University of Chicago, having been elected to thatchair, with Miss Brown as assistant.C. S. Farriss.Des Moines College opened its present quarter two weeks earlier than usual. The totalnumber enrolled is 157. This is 10 per cent.ahead of last year. The same instructors arepresent who were here during 1898-9. Thecollege classes contain about one half more students than the academy classes. The enrollmentcontains representatives from seven colleges, eight academies, and thirty-five high schools.H. L. Stetson,President.Rush Medical College. — The present yearat Rush Medical College is of especial interestbecause of the introduction of the system of elec-tives and of the quarterly system, no undergraduate medical college having before attemptedthe continuous session. The quarterly systemwent into effect July 1 and the first SummerQuarter was attended by 100 students. The matriculation for the Autumn Quarter numbers 840students, an increase of about fifty over the matriculation for the corresponding period last year.It is already evident that the medical curriculum lends itself with especial facility to thequarterly system and that it will be fully as advantageous to the medical as to the collegiatestudent. The address at the opening exercises October 4was delivered by Professor John Clarence Websterwho has succeeded the late Professor Etheridge as the head of the Department of Obstetrics andGynecology. Professor Christian Fenger has succeeded the late Professor John B. Hamilton. There have been some minor additions to theFaculty. John M.
