The resultsamply justify the hopesof the originators of theThe ClassSystem.system as it is in vogueat the University. The old collegessystem had points in its favor, strongpoints. The trouble was that thepoints appeared only upon paper. Asa matter of fact, the homogenityhoped for was not evident in the&roup of men and women making Upa college. It was found that it wasnot possible to mix firs second.third and fourth year men and women and achieve a unified wholesimply because all of the persons init were registered for the same general course-arts literature or science. After a trial the colleges system was abandoned. The old, timetried class system was adopted exdush, ely. After all, the natural unitin a University is the class. Thestudents who pass through Freshman trials, Sophomore discoveries,Junior achievements. and Seniortriumphs together are welded together to make a unifi.ed whole. irrespective of the major sequence individual members are pursuing. Thecomraderie of the professionalchools, of course, sometimes, overleaps class bounds. but all in all, there is nothing like classes for di\-iding a University body into working units. The system at Chicagohas been worked out wen, too. Theclass elections are enthusiasticallyparticipated in. The class officerswork hard and the class affairs arewell-attended. This year's Seniorclass has already had half-a-dozenfunctions, one of the attended bynearly seventy-five percent of themembers of the class. The Undergraduate council, made' up of representatives of the classes, has proveditself a useful and valu:lb!e body.Membership in it has come to be adistinctly desirable thing. Witnessthe nine candidates for the threeeats in the council from the Juniorclass r Yes, the class system is a success. The students who play theirparts in it by "sticking" with theirrespective classes from the first willcount themselves lucky, for in afteryears they will be able to look backup"n a unified class, and host ofwarm friends in their classmates.
