Of, course, the last feature is largelydue to the age of the institutionsand . the consequent number of itsalUD1l1i in a large city_But a personwho never heard of the college couldnot help but enjoy the performancegiven by one of the clubs referred to:- the voices are so well trained; theprograms are so diversified andinterting; and the club is so splendidly drilled,' and presents such agraceful, as well as dignified, appearance. Comparisons are odious, hut how nearly have Chicago gleeclubs in the past few years come tothe mark set by these older easternclubs? The answer is, not very near. Our University is the peer of anyin the countryi, Our youth has notprevented us from turning out football teams fully as good as those thatrepresent institutions much older. Then the time-honored excuse, youth, cannot be presented to explain themediocrity of our musical clubs inlate years. There is no reason tobelieve that there are any the fewergood singers in the University than,in other colleges. The fault lieswith a University policy of restraintthat has limited the public appearance of the club. Few trips of anyJength have been taken: consequently, there bas not been the proper incentive for men to go out for theclubL The club has gone along fromyear to year without making any appreciable advance. Noone expectsa world-beating club in a twinkling, but it is not reasonable to ask thatthe University authoritic;s allow theclub ot take a trip this year; thatL'te club officers increase the size ofthe club by offering the trip as aninducement; that the coach makethe men work harder than ever before; and that, Snall:t, the studentbody support the club enthusiastically by attending its home concert,if not by tryin, out for membershipin it?The GleeClub.
