COLLEGE DAILIES TOSTART CAMPAIGN FORRETURN OF MICHIGANThe Aaiance of Western College Dailies decided upon the following statement as their position on theMichigan-Conference situation:I. Competition between Michigan and the Conference colleges is desired by the students and alumni of theConference colleles as well as by Michilan.2. After reviewing. conditions at the several colleletS we have decided that the !)oints at issue areA. Faculty control of athletics-B. Training table.3. THE FACULTY CONTROL-Conference rules provid for "full and complete faculty control ofathletics." But, in at least one Confrence college, MinQesotct. .tudents are in virtual control, At Minnesota.the board of control consists of two faculty men appointed by the Facully senate. two alumni, and eight students elected by popular vote- The oniy power held by the fa&:Q}ty is that of veto and not of legislation. At Michigan we find the following situation: The Bo"''' consists of four faculty men chosen by theFaculty senate. the graduate director of athletics, three ahmmi chosen by the board of regents of the univershy, and but three students appointed b) the student ··board of urrectocs: which is composed of the graduatedirector of athletics and of die Varsi y team managers who are elected by the student body. Further, theboard of regents, a body appointed by the governor of the ateU" has final authority. We believe that this system is the same in spirit and p'licc. auno ugh not identical in form, as at theConference colleges. We believe then that this dltference Ui ,"cuter of mere technicality and that the realpoint at issue lies in the matter of the training table.4- THE TRAINING TABLE-Ta.e training table syat.m at Michigan is as follows: A private individualruns the table for profit, charging each member of the Vhy Squad, assigned to the table by the coach, four dollars per week for two meals a day. Whatevr de"ci ilf'ses is made up by the Athletic associarion, this deficit being about $800 for the past year. In at least two Conference colleges a EOcalled training tablet:xists where team members eat toge ther but pay the full amouat of the board. It is genef'211y conceded, andwe believe that these tables conducted in this fashion are in accord with the pirit and .letter of the Confer-ence rules- Hence: . ..S. The actual difference betweer Michigan and the Conference lies ir the fact that the Michigan Athleticassociation contributes partially to the support of the training table. -II this feature can be eliminatedthere. remains no logical ground for the further separation of Michigan and the Conference colleges.President A.
